several folks’here’did comment about the over-arching fact that it is getting sad people can’t work together on relatively minor/easy problems between each other.
“golden rule” has been replaced with “i do what i want, m-effer” for many people nowadays.

If the guy needed more space, he could have paid for a seat with more room instead of taking space the woman paid for.

Personally, I don't see the problem.
I'm 6' 4", with a relatively short torso and loo-ong legs.
When the person in front of me tries to recline his seat (and never, in my 30-some-odd years of flying has anyone ever had the courtesy to first even only glance in my direction before attempting to recline), he will find that this is impossible, because my legs are in the way.
After a minute or two of futile fiddling with the reclining lever and huffing and puffing, the person in front of my will either a) give up and leave his seat unreclined, or b) finally look behind himself and ask if something is blocking his seat, whereupon I smile and say, "Why, yes: My bleeding kneecaps!"

There's the problem. You don't think.
Just fly 1st class, or business class on overseas flights. I think the spacing is different. (So are the benefits. Long ago, on Pan American JFK to Narita, in 1st class they served Dom Perignon all the way --)
I'm totally with you there, buddy. I cannot STAND little kids behind me kicking my seat, screaming in my vicinity (it reverberates so much more in the confines of a plane), standing up on their seat and touching my head, etc. Since I paid good money for my seat on the plane, I believe I am entitled to sit there in peace and read, watch the movie, etc. without disturbances like this. I give the parent about 30 seconds to get their kid to stop kicking, touching, or throwing stuff on me. After that, I will tell the kid to stop. Screaming, I leave correction to the parents.
As for reclining, I paid for my seat, I'm gonna recline if it's more comfortable for me to sit like that. I never recline full back, just a little bit. And I don't snap my seat backwards suddenly to spill my back neighbor's drink or something. If the back neighbor was employing a "Knee Defender" or some such garbage, I'd have the stewardess take it away from them. Those things are illegal on most major airlines.

If you’re 6’ or taller, simply jamming your knees against the seat in front of you will prevent it from reclining. If the passenger isn’t a lardass, you can also slowly push the seat back to an upright position. Been there done that.
I found additional claims in other articles about this.
* United airlines bans these devices by policy.
* The stewardess asked the man to remove the device, he refused.
* The lady threw the drink after the man refused the stewardess’ request.
* The seats they were in have 4 more inches legroom than standard coach. (this article said it had more but not how much)
Guess united could ban the guy from the airline for using prohibited device and refusing to take it off when asked

LOL!!! That IS funny what you wrote. flaglady, be aware that there are people like me who just don’t want to get into it with A-HOLES who recline their seat FULLY — particularly when meal service is STILL going on. Rather than “get into” it with a-hole (as they have already demonstrated by putting a seat fully reclined) I prefer the passive method of getting even. A few boogers in their hair tossed by me pretty much satisfies my need to beat the crap out of them. Problem solved. And yes, in the past I HAVE gotten lips from idiots who do that, after they’ve been politely asked not to. A night flight over the ocean is one thing, but even then these people should not get huffy when asked to UNrecline the seat so the person behind can get up to use the restroom.

Not to worry people. In the spirit of “problem solving”, congress will be passing new regulations that will, very soon, make flying a total living hell for all involved. Count on it.

Reclined or not reclined, my legs are cramped.
If “leg room” is really people’s concern, choose THE FRONT ROW when confirming your seating, choose First class when purchasing your tickets, choose the row behind the ones over the wing (since those seats don’t recline), or charter a private plane.
If he'd claimed to be muslim, the airlines would've given up any argument over the matter.
