Gentle Wonder

Those were the times I was king of the ants, watching my subjects ‘till there were holes in the knees of my pants

Times when I could soar on eagles wings looking down upon many little things

I played, I danced -I don’t any more- I lived at ease for it was a time of inner peace

I remember when mom and dad were making up again, staying up all night sitting under the stars and I played outside until the sun rose and it was time for school

I didn’t know then that it was a night I would always remember fondly

One of five kids but I felt like I had our parents to myself even if I was all the way across the front yard

It was a time when I was the ruler of my little world, my imagination, where I could retreat and retain my innocence.

I didn’t know what a cruel world awaited... or did I know the crazy things people do

It is a feeling of contentment and pureness than we should all go through... at least for a while

Those were the times I remember as the happiest of my life still.

And I probably always will.

I was eating supper (chicken and spinach) and reading the World War II news.

Just saw this ... I’m overrun with Ebola pings ;-).

Soup is a good plan. Look for recipes with lots of vegetables (frozen or canned are fine) and some protein such as meat or beans. There should be several varieties of the old standard, “Garden Vegetable Soup,” in your program materials.

Not a pepperoni fan.

I've told this story before, but:

Almost thirty years ago, I was at a closing in Tucson or Phoenix. The closing created a fund that acquired 12-15 hotels upon creation. The hotels had about ten different owners and the closing took most of three days.

Over 25 of us worked into the first night and a partner from the Tucson/Phoenix firm asked his Hispanic secretary to order pizza for us for supper.

She said she'd never eaten pizza and didn't know how to do it. He told her to call a specific pizza place and said it would handle it for her.

For 25 of us, she ordered 25 large Hawaiian pizzas.

The partner communicated something to her the next day, but the message was apparently not clearly conveyed. About 20 of us were working late the next night and she was asked to order pizza (no take-out Chinese in Arizona in the 80s).

She ordered 20 large pepperoni pizzas.

Diversity can be a good thing.

My parents had an argument one day, but they sat on the tailgate of the truck all night long chatting and making up.

I was a little kid who stayed up all night too playing in the yard. Radio in the window playing music. All my sisters and my brother asleep.

It was a nice night.

Of course I pretty much slept through school the next day.

I remember staying out all night at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi to celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976. I was 10. There was a carnival and air show. Dad’s squadron had a soft-drinks booth, and I worked serving Pepsis, iirc, until they shut down. I found a $20 on the ground, and my parents let me keep it because there was no chance of finding who dropped it, among the thousands.

After the official event closed, the pilots and wives walked over to the golf course and sat around and drank, and the kids ran around in the dark. We weren’t usually allowed out after dark, except for 4th of July fireworks (also on the golf course).

I don’t know how we got home, but Dad was always a great driver, even having drink taken, until he started having blackouts before he got his pacemaker.

I will begin to lay in supplies of SOUPS and maybe some Chinese foods, because both are high in protein and low in calories. I don’t know what else to do, and I’m desperate to get rid of this weight.

Soup recipes can’t be all that hard to find, so I will look and see what things I need to buy to make them. My problem is storing them, as they come in such large batches and I have no containers.

Ziplock bags! Just make sure the soup is cool before you put it in the bag.

That’s a good memory, Geron. My folks were never ones who believed in PDAs so we never knew they had problems. Perhaps, if we HAD known, we would have had more, sweeter memories.

Thanks for sharing...it couldn’t have been easy. *HUG*

My supply of bags is pretty low...I only buy them about every other month, and this is the off month. So I will check to see what soups I can make with what I have on hand that don’t require much storage space.

Can you just put a lid on the pot and stick it in the refrigerator? I used to do that sometimes, back when the refrigerator wasn’t as full. Then you can heat what you want in a smaller pot.

I can, but the pots have a tendency to become Science Projects. I don’t have a lot of pots and pans because I live alone. The stuff in my pan cupboard is minimal, at best.

I put new stuff in the fridge and the older stuff goes to the back...little by little, it ferments and becomes something from a Sci-Fi movie. And then it goes into the Dumpster for further deliberations...

You’ll recall my adventures with fermented tomato and carrot soup. So it’s quietly gurgling to itself ... no problem!

It helps if you can eat the same thing at every meal for several days!

It was an interesting life. I was in 5th grade or so before I realized that, “What ship is your dad on?” didn’t make sense to some kids.
