After first displayed publicly at its annual developer conference in June, Apple has finally released iOS 8 for iPhones and iPads.

Just days before the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology giant opens its retail stores to sell the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, existing smartphone and tablet users can upgrade to the latest mobile operating system.

I have fully installed iOS 8 on my iPhone 5. No hitches and fully functional. There are some good advances in this OS. I’ve noticed the keyboard use is made better by word suggestions. Totally new and the suggestions are good. So far, already worth it.

Caution is needed for some items on Craigslist.

I've bought and sold a lot of computer gear and other stuff on Craigslist. Some sellers invite me into their home while they're alone, and are almost inviting me to roll them and rip off stuff. Crazy. Others are cautious, and do the swap at a neutral 3rd-party site. I'm the latter, buying and selling at well-lit parking lots with lots of foot traffic around. I've become friends with some I did deals with, and we laugh about how cautious we were of each other. It doesn't hurt to be cautious.

All of my Craigslist electronics deals have been at a fast food joint or coffee shop with free WiFi. In addition to being a public place, it also offers a comfortable place to wait if one party or the other is running late, and the WiFi means you can test the goods.

I saw a headline this morning on Yahoo warning owners of 4 and previous versions NOT to upgrade to iOS8.

A well-intentioned but pretty much pointless warning. iOS8 won't run on anything older than an iPhone 4S. It's running great on my 5S, but I'd hold off on the 4S. If past experience is a guide, it will be slow on the oldest supported machine out of the box, but a .1 upgrade in the near future will improve that.

Well, one thing I found out is that if you listen to audiobooks while you’re sleeping the, “Hey, Siri,” feature fires up and scares you to death.

I ask for a driver’s license. If they drive to the Starbucks, I get their plate number as well.

I just found another issue. . . iOS 8 is about 740 MB larger after install than iOS 7. So, if you got a lot of photos, movies, apps, and have your 16G near full, you’ll have to delete some.

On an iPad, the hit is about 1.08GB.

Every time Apple upgrades its OS I lose another gig of storage space on my Ipad.

Sad to say, that's about what you lose this time too. But some apps become unnecessary. Apple has apparently licensed Shazam and it's incorporated into SIRI, so you can delete Shazam if you have that app.

Right. That's advice for the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4, which came before it, won't run iOS8 no matter how hard you try.

All told, including install and reboot, it took between 3-4 hours yesterday. My initial observations:

* As always, an Apple OS update turned Bluetooth back on, even though I have it turned off since I don’t use any Bluetooth devices.

* WiFi seems to be a bit flaky compared to iOS7, especially in places where the signal is weaker.

* The new location services mode of allowing apps to use location services in the background is a good thing in theory, but one misbehaving app can suck the life out of your battery. I’ve disabled all of them, and will re-enable them one by one to figure out which one(s) are the culprit. (Though from past history with location services, I’m looking real skeptical at you, The Weather Channel app.)

* A small percentage of apps I’ve tried, notably games, don’t work at all or seem degraded to performance. Maybe next time, Apple could announce the upgrade a couple of months in advance so that developers could use beta versions to be ready for the rel... oh, right.

* Visually, not much is different. There’s a subtle difference in some fonts and icons, though the task switcher and notification center have definitely seen changes.

* No noticeable difference in performance on my 5S.

* Really, though, most of the above is low-impact. There will be a WiFi patch soon, I presume, and the real “oomph” of iOS 8 comes from Continuity and Extensions, the former is waiting on Yosemite and the latter has only a few examples out there so far, and none that I’ve really played with yet.

Found another issue.
When my iPhone is vertical, the power level and time is on top.
When it’s in landscape, the power level and time is gone.
I don’t like that .

I think it's a feature, not an issue. It gives more usable screen in landscape mode. It's easy to turn the phone to check power level if you want. I prefer that.

Have you tried a full cold restart? I had a few little problems after the install and restart, but they all disappeared after a cold restart. . . So far.

I’ve come across two extensions so far, one of which I know i will use every day and the other I might. I’ve been using 1Password since my default password got released into the wild in a hack of Yahoo several years ago; nearly all of my passwords are long random strings. I can now open 1Password with a fingerprint, and it’s integrated with Safari. Sweet.

I’ve also downloaded the SwiftKey keyboard, which has been quite popular on Android. It’s definitely the fastest way to type one-handed, but I don’t think it’s faster than both of my thumbs.

I also haven’t seen any noticeable performance hit on the 5S.

A restart helped. Biggest issue is still WiFi performance with lower-strength signals. I’m getting much worse performance on the edge of the WiFi area than I did a week ago.

Tried again today to download and install IOS 8 on my iPhone 5s via iTunes. After 15 minutes, estimated download time is 53 hours. Complete FAIL!!!!
