Apple iOS 8 problems: Grimm tale with Slow, Buggy, Laggy, Crashy, Drainy, Bloaty and Doc

iOS 8 upgrade problems have reared their ugly heads, bang on cue. Early-adopting iMagicMirror owners are finding their devices suffering some seriously poisoned Apple.

Here we go again. Every major iOS update causes suspicious slowdowns in older iPhone and iPad types. It's as if Apple wants you to upgrade to the latest shiny. As if.

In IT Blogwatch, bloggers set aside their cynicism.

curated these bloggy bits for your entertainment.

Gregg Keizer takes a beautiful new Queen:

The initial uptake for Apple's iOS 8 has been less than half of...iOS 7.

In the 24 hours since its mid-day Wednesday launch, iOS 8 powered just 7.3% of all iOS devices that accessed Chitika's ad network. ... "iOS 8 adoption has been remarkably slower than either iOS 7 or iOS 6," said Andrew Waber [who] compared the 7.3% of iOS 8 against last year's iOS 7, which collected an 18.2% share [and] iOS 6's share was 14.8%. MORE

Some say slow uptake is down to the 5GB free-space requirement. Jonny Evans has great tips:

Some iOS 8 upgraders have complained it is necessary to delete content from their devices...to install the new OS. That's true if you upgrade in isolation, but far less of a problem...if you upgrade using iTunes [when you] need just under 1GB of space.

Can somebody explain to me the absolutely CRAZY long lines I’m seeing at every Apple Store I pass by in the wee hours of the morning ( I worked the night shift on a disaster recovery test and saw this with my own eyes ).

Near my place, I could count at least 500 people standing in line at about 1 AM. after the iPhone 6 was announced....

WHY CAN’T PEOPLE WAIT TILL DAYTIME OR EVEN FOR A WEEK OR MORE ? Why must they have it IMMEDIATELY?

I have noticed that when certain MacAfee updates take place my computer afterwards works slower.

Great marketing. It’s pretty much that simple.

Limited supply. If you don’t pre-order on day one, or don’t wait in line, you have to wait a month to get it when supply is available.

Power draw is accelerated some, but they keyboard is worth it. Not to mention that Apple stuck it to the man for the time being. The phone link to iPad’s and Mac will be pretty good too.

I definitely had a few problems. The biggest one was that my iPad kept locking up. After about a dozen lockups, I just happen to try turning off the multi-gesture setting since I noticed it locked up on “swipe up” and after that it worked fine. Later, I turned the multi-gesture back on the it was fine. Other problems were a few apps and those had to be re-installed and they worked fine after that.

Yes, darn it, why not? I guess for the same reason my kids always INSISTED upon opening their presents first thing Christmas morning upon waking up. Jeez, those crazy kids...what’s the rush?

All the Apple cultists that have been sneering at the Galaxy phones "eww, who would ever use a phone that big?!?!" have been suffering a serious case of size envy, so they need a phone the size of the S5 or Note 3, RIGHT NOW!

Having the latest and greatest consumer gadget gives many people a shot of self-esteem. These are by and large people that are unsuccessful and frustrated in their everyday life and having the shiniest and newest gadget gives them - at least temporarily - bragging rights and a "leg up" on their superiors.

I don’t know. They’re like zombies. If Ebola comes to America’s shores when Apple has a new phone out, we’d be doomed.

Jeez, like moths to the light ... Apple “haters” are drawn to threads such as this to take shots at Apple products plus to take the opportunity to hurl insults at actual Apple users.

I’ve never been able to understand this strange phenomenon.

Did the update on my iPhone 5S. Having hard time posting. Cannot see keyboard and text at same time.

When viewing webpages in landscape mode, cannot scroll. Must rotate phone to portrait mode, at which time page automatically reloads.

When I click a link on a page, and then use the back arrow to return, it brings me back to the top of the page, and I must scroll to find my place again, which means rotating to portrait mode and waiting for page to reload again.

Images are sometimes shown full size, often taking up more than the screen. I cannot pan to see the portions that are off-screen. Sometimes the images are shrunk to screen size or smaller, but I cannot zoom in to see detail. Was trying to look at arrest reports posted at another thread, but I could only see the top 2/3 of the left half, and it was too small to read it.

Can no longer share files with my husband’s iPad. Says both devices must be updated, but the iPad can’t be updated because it requires 4.4 gigabytes of free space. 4.4 gigabytes!!! WTF?

But Siri can now tell me the name of the song my neighbor is blasting on his car radio, so it’s all good.

I want to edit the top of this post, but it won’t let me scroll that high.

If Ebola comes to America’s shores ...

Never fear. Hussein and his gang of thugs are importing it as fast as they can, and to speed things up, he is sending 3000 military to bring it back to their families and the rest of us.

(Sorry for the hijack - Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.)

“Every major iOS update causes suspicious slowdowns in older iPhone and iPad types.”

Uh...that’s been the case for every operating system upgrade on every computing platform ever. Doing more takes more resources and more steps.

I believe the concept you're looking for is called "petulance."

Sounds like a typical followup to a successful product - bigger, slower, costlier.
