Soda causes our cells to age as much as smoking does, study finds

Drink a 20-ounce soda daily, and you may be causing your cells to age as much as they would if you smoked, a study suggests. Researchers investigated DNA from 5,309 adults, focusing on telomeres, the caps on the ends of our cells' chromosomes, Time reports.

"and it's known that telomere length MAY be linked to life span" LOL

Sounds like it MAY not really be a very scientific study.

The study didn't actually "find" any such thing.

Researchers also looked at the effects of diet soda and fruit juice on telomeres; while "100 percent fruit juice was marginally associated with longer telomeres," they write in the American Journal of Public Health, diet sodas and non-carbonated "sugar-sweetened beverages" weren't associated with telomere length.

So apparently non-diet soda in the amount of 20 ounces daily may have been associated with shorter telomere lengths, which may or may not be associated with aging. That's a little tenuous to be called "science". Just my $0.02.

Not sure about the cells, but those gulping on soda do have rotten teeth. But you can get em fixed these days.

Fox annoys with their fearmongering articles sourced from - wait for it - the rapidly dying-out Time Magazine.

The study was performed by UC-San Francisco. Think there was any a prior and confirmation bias at work there?

Ha Ha. Not if I exfoliate and moisture each day!

I’m not a soda drinker; I like my Whiskey neat. :)

Lessee here....I smoked for fifty years (quit almost six years ago now), and I drink to this day easily 20+ ounces of chemically sweetened “DIET” soda, so I should by this account look about one million years old, or be dead.

Mrs. RQSR says I don’t look like either. I’ll take her word for it.

I only read the studies that say I won’t die from __________( fill in the blank).....:o)

Honestly I read a report yesterday on same subject that said diet drinks were not, NOT, doing the cell damage that sweetened sodas were doing.... Just went to look for it , couldn’t find on drudge... My bad, I’m dead.

Living causes your cells to age so I think it’s high time we banned living.

Oh, we're getting there.

Don’t take this personally but this is a lame response. Why is it your choice to determine what you die from? Is that not God’s decision? Just a thought.
