A 29-year-old terminal cancer sufferer who had previously spoken of her right to die has ended her own life surrounded by her family.

According to friends and family of Brittany Maynard, she passed away in her Portland, Oregon, home after her condition worsened and the tumor took over.

However she was able to choose to die before she lost her ability to function.

People.com said she wrote on Facebook : 'Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love.

'Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me … but would have taken so much more.'

I’m anti-DWD. There is not dignity in killing yourself.

“”What “right to die”? There is no such right in the Bill of Rights.”””

Really? Who has jurisdiction over YOUR life?

She could have done this without anyone knowing except her family. This is the debate she wanted. Then she put her family on the ‘mission’. Frankly, I’m sorry that I know about it at all.

My father died of the same affliction, but thankfully his tumor caused him no physical pain. The mental anguish was almost unbearable for him and also for us.

Each case is different and I neither condone nor chastize her for her decision. Having witnessed what a glioblastoma does to a loved one, it is not for me to judge.

I wish she would’ve kept it a private matter. I guess that’s the part that irritates me the most.

I have no problem if she quietly went and took too many pills....its a sin to take your own life but our God is a merciful God....

my problem is with the extravaganza she put on and the pity party...that is pandering to evil...

there are thousands and thousands battling cancer, and liver disease and addiction and all sorts of personal problems, and for them to see this GIVING UP in their face is not good....its horribly bad for them....

the pill/abortion/playboy philosophy.....I put all our "modern" ideas in one group....working towards the total debasement of life.....

Since all sins are equal...I will gladly leave the task of judgment to the higher power.

Secret Agent Man, animals are not made in the image of man. I realize that you may not hold the same views as I do in this regard, but as a Christian, the Lord never describes animals as creatures with souls. God never mentioned in the Old or New Testament that Christ came to earth to save animals. Jesus was crucified and concurred death for man.

Committing suicide is self-murder. Our lives are not ours to take. Furthermore, to do so is not only against the Lord’s will, but you’re hurting your loved ones and society as a whole.

Our “quality of life” is not determined by our ability to function, produce, or how we feel. We are intrinsically valuable and beloved because we are made in the image of God. Also, we express true love, sacrificial love by caring for those who are ill. This kind of love is an important and integral part of a healthy society. It’s the reason we would lay down our lives for others.

My heart breaks for Brittany’s family. I’m saddened that Brittany believed that not only did she have the right to end her life, but that life was not worth the dark beauty to Iive until the very end.

I’ve lost dearly beloved family members to cancer. I am thankful that they lived out their life and death with courage and inner strength, and allowed those who love them to express the most profound the sacrificial kind of love we can give.

My deepest condolences to Brittany’s loved ones. May they know a peace and comfort that only comes from Christ.

If the Founding Fathers had that attitude, the USA would have fallen apart in two years. Private morality does not mean suppressing public righteous indignation.

If one has to ask that question, is one a conservative?

The One above never granted a “right to die”, especially a “right” to murder oneself.

The “right to die” will become a “duty to die” within my lifetime I fear.

G_d may forgive her, I cannot.

The Founding Fathers set forth the a pathway for this country, to the best of my recollection.

There are laws to be abided by, without a doubt. But in the end...we will all have to answer to God. For every transgression...no matter how small.

What does it have to do with being conservative? Who has jurisdiction over your body?

Yes, but that doesn't mean that the right doesn't exist. The One above might very well recognize such a right in some cases...

“If you ain’t free to leave on your own terms, you ain’t free.”

Not being or having been in this person’s position, I don’t think that I have any business expressing my opinion on it.

It does worry me, though, that someday economic pressures may cause society to encourage people to “hurry it up a bit...”!

Here’s a disturbing possible near-future example. Suppose it looks like you are going to spend $200K of Medicare on what will certainly be the last six months of your life. You are given a choice: “cut it short” and leave your family 100K (maybe even tax-free), or spend the money and die anyway. Sounds like a win-win-win for you, your family, and society, right?
