The Progressive War on Science
The Globe and Mail ^ | Saturday, Nov. 29 2014 | Margaret Wente

An epidemic of whooping cough has broken out in California. Not long ago, this ancient scourge had been banished by modern medicine. But now it’s back, thanks to people who believe modern medicine is dangerous.

These folks are not ignorant backwoods hicks. Many of them have advanced degrees. They live in some of the nicest neighbourhoods on Earth – places like Marin County, Napa and Malibu. But they believe that vaccines cause autism or worse. Immunization rates in some of the more fashionable California schools resemble those in the more backward parts of Africa. At the Valley Waldorf City School in Lake Balboa, for example, 88 per cent of students don’t have the standard vaccinations.

They may not be "backwoods hicks" but they ARE ignorant. And I would add, more than likely unintelligent as well. Their "scientific" opinions are driven by fashion and groupthink.

I take umbrage at your opinion for many reasons. I respectfully suggest you examine your own point of view which, in my opinion, betrays your own ignorance, and vulnerability to groupthink.

How can they get enrolled in a public school, or most private schools?

A friend could not find an affordable school when she decided not to conclude the full set of vaccines.

Ended up home schooling, and both are better for it.

A couple of hundred years ago they were called,”Luddites” Today they are better described as ignorant Marxist/Progressive Obama supporters.

I did not vaccinate my kids. Am I a Marxist?

Truth is when I got my vaccinations as a kid I remember having my arm in a sling for days because I could barely use it. I also remember bleeding from the shot hole from my shoulder to my wrist.

But hey I should trust science to tell me it was my fault.

OOPs, that didn’t take long. And I take umbrage at YOUR point of view as well, which, in my opinion, betrays your own ignorance and vulnerability to groupthink. Yes, indeed.

then you will have to argue with me, genius. 20 plus years a biotech analyst. I studied this vaccine debate and I come down firmly, fact for fact, against the current federally controlled system of mismanaged over-vaccination. That is it in a nutshell. You all are on automatic when it comes to understanding research, regulation and public health policy of vaccines, vaccination, after effects, etc.

The CDC and the FDA, WITHOUT QUESTION, have blood on their hands. It is a matter of record. A record suppressed well by the government-media complex.

Tid bit. There exists a vaccine court. Individuals who have suffered from vaccinations, including vaccine induced autism, make their case before medically trained judges. As of at least a couple years ago, the court has awarded nearly $500 million...You read that right, genius. nearly $500 million in damages. And not everyone who would qualify is finding their way to this court. It’s not exactly advertised in the news.

Plus I get the whole epidemiology/statistical analysis game and it sucks. You? You are just encouraging victimhood by proclaiming your ignorance.

Get them vaccinated. Nothing like a good case of Mumps to kill the idea of Grand kids.

As more and more third World people come into our country, your children are exposed to more and more diseases that where believed eradicated in our country.

There are potential side effects to vaccinations, but they are very small when compared to the devastation and death caused by the diseases they are meant to prevent.

Thanks for your courteous replies. I should have expected to hear from the FReeper Kook Brigade.

Yep. That settles it, all right -- a bunch of slimeball lawyers extort half a billion dollars and your case is demonstrated.

Wow, very interesting. Aside from the inside knowledge part of your post you pointed out something everyone on this board should pick up on. We should all realize as you pointed out that ANYTHING this government manages is actually horribly mismanaged and likely harmful for the American people. So when the government mandates a large number of vacines, logic alone should tell us to be suspect. This should have been obvious to everyone on this thread including myself but I think even conservatives still have a built in trust for what we believe to be true science. Because most of us don't really know anything about vaccines we missed the obvious red flag of government involvement.

"These folks are not ignorant backwoods hicks."

No, Margaret. They are ignorant backwoods hicks. Where they reside has nothing to do with it.

"Many of them have advanced degrees. They live in some of the nicest neighbourhoods on Earth – places like Marin County, Napa and Malibu."

Margaret, I have advanced degrees, and I have lived in Marin County. I found a high concentration of ignorant backwoods hicks there. I couldn't wait to get out.

I moved to The Middle of Nowhere. There I encountered and lived among countless educated intelligent sophisticates.

(Margaret needs to get her thinking straight and get in touch with reality.)

(Or--if she's open to the truth--visit the Backwoods or The Middle of Nowhere, for an eye-opening experience!)

And by the way--Marin County, California, is not a particularly nice neighbourhood. I couldn't wait to get out, and I've never regretted leaving there.

I did not say the choice shouldn’t be yours. I said that the idea of stopping it for all was not healthful.

As a kid I grew up in the era of fear of all these diseases, measles, whooping cough, chicken pox, all of which I had and TB and Polio which had parents so frightened that they would not let the kids go swimming or out to the beach.

Vaccinations caused these diseases which maimed or even killed youngsters at a wholesale rate to be minimized and in many cases, such as polio completely eliminated. My children, thanks to modern medicine suffered from none of them.

Now thanks to a madman in Washington many, if not all of them have been reintroduced and spread wantonly across the entire nation. I am sorry that you seem to have such adverse reactions to inoculations. Maybe you should seek a better provider.

It distresses me to think that babies born today and their parents would have to face the same debilitating and life threatening diseases that were successfully eliminated generations ago through the application of modern medical practices.

We are not Zimbabwe or west Africa “YET”.

Howbout you uphold the right of free individuals in a free society to choose for themselves....informed by experience and knowledge. ...whether or not to roll dice with the lives of their children?

My own children have had no vaccinations since my younger, at age 1.5, was nearly killed by a MMR. She survived it, but there was, clearly, brain damage.

In the 30 years since, they are healthy and unsullied by the diseases these nostrums combat. And my oldest, a globetrotting merchant officer, is naturally immune to the same, apparently.

Right or wrong in my opinion, I declare my right to dismiss the commands of meddlers and self-important ‘experts’ when the advice, with penalties attendant thereto, contravene my own surmise.

If you want to protect yourself, then by all means, get injected.

Do not burden me and others with your self-righteous force.

Too many conservatives that are 50+ years old argue for vaccinations not realizing that it is a far different set of vaccinations being administered today.

I received three as a child in the late 60’s.

Today there are a boatload of vaccinations, many administered at the same time.

If FDA/big pharma were honest they would then test them in that same manner, all administered together, but as far as I have seen, they do not.

What we have today is big pharma/FDA run amok.

Yup.  What you are seeing is a typical government reaction. "If one is good, then 10 will be even better!"

They figure that if they wiped out smallpox and polio, they could do the same for an unlimited number of diseases all at once. I suspect we'd have had just as much, if not more success if they'd focused on one or two at a time rather than 15, with all the interactions and complications such a raft of simultaneous vaccinations can induce.

My wife has been dealing with doctors quite a lot over the past several years as a result of having inflammitory breast cancer.  The doctors have done a good job with some things, and (IMO) an utterly horrible job with others. Having spent quite a bit of time being rather involuntarily exposed to the medical "profession", it has become quite clear to me that when they call it the "practice" of medicine they are, for once, being honest about it.

The fact that so little (in relative terms) research actually goes into looking at the details of the interactions of these various vaccinations, is kind of telling to me. What I've observed more than anything else, is that medicine, as practiced today is almost entirely about maximizing a revenue stream for concerned parties (especially big pharma).

I have no issue with your personal choices. I happen to share some of your concerns, for example, I do not get flu shots. But I don’t try to elevate my personal choices into social issues.

That’s my beef. Perhaps I misjudged you based on a misapprehension of your posts.

I wouldn’t force my opinion on anyone. But when someone declares that refusniks are simple and ignorant, as in post #2, I am compelled to stand my ground for my children’s sake, and others who are harrassed by the state for daring to part from the herd for any reason they may choose. The social issue is on display in #2....which issue you seemed to championed...proffering the position that declining state-mandated vaccination is a danger to society, and that, oh well, if something goes boink, you can get a nice electric wheelchair for the kid.....or burial expenses... paid....for the good of society. Some comfort! I take much comfort that I, an ignorant societal termite, did at least one smart thing in my life.

I advocate for open minds on the issue.
