I’ll set my alarm.
Wouldn’t want to miss it.

Four billion years from now.

... more than a billion years after the sun burns out. Could mankind survive that? If so, and if mankind were even still recognizable as such, this slow motion event would not present a challenge.

The sun is getting hotter with age. The oceans will evaporate in one half to one billion years from now. No stars actually collide in a galaxy collision anyway, any more than they do now. But it will result in a huge star burst—all the dormant gas being converted into new stars suddenly, and then no more after that.

Arrrgghhh you're one of those climate change guys! No doubt all this is caused by carbon not being taxed high enough. Let's put meters on everyone's nostrils and anuses. Don't forget cow flatulence! Ban the hamburger! Everybody must be vegan by tomorrow morning! (ahem, but I thought beans cause ga. . .) OOOOHHH horrors! A denialist! Call out the tanks and planes! Bomb it out of existence! Look! It ran into the old growth forest! Burn it to the ground! It's the only way we will be sure the denialist devil won't live to spread its evil, vile climate denialism. Whatever it takes, we must root such thought out before it pollutes us! Whew! That was close. Cough, hack. Wheeze! It took only forty square miles this time. Bo y it's smokey around here. See what such thinking leads to? When will they learn how dangerous such thoughs are? We have to save the world from such insanity ever getting lose.

Sorry. . . I think I just had a linkage into a Liberal ecofreak's wet dream. . .

Mere engineering! As the Sun's increase is estimated to be .01% every million years, all that is needed is to adjust Earth's orbit correspondingly. Small matters about the Solar System equilibrium will obviously have to be taken into account but that is just basic physics.

Thanks for getting me off to a good start this morning...I mean it. Very creative, but unfortunately all too close to reality. Up to a few years ago I just couldn’t fathom that there were so many “people out there” who really beieved the extremist liberal tripe. On the other hand I’m sure they probably think I live in “fairy tale land” since I believe that Jesus Christ will return one day to destroy this earth and build a new one.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

No, no, it’s the sun that causes climate change, therefore we must be doing something to the sun. So if you don’t want the oceans to boil away in a billion years, you have to start paying more taxes now, because it takes that long to prevent it. I assure you your tax dollars will go straight to where they’re needed—abortion clinics to help decrease the surplus population of climate changers. Energy-efficient homes for undocumented citizens. The same citizens who will vote for ecologically-conscious leaders using the names of dead people. Quiet investments in very expensive research studies into how we’re all going to die from global warming. And of course indoctri...I mean education aimed at teaching grade school children that Republicans are killing cute little polar bears.

Might be easier to build a big sunshade in space, at the L2 point (IIRC).

Yeah, that would be a good idea since both galaxies are heading toward each other at about 700,000mph. Still I think you’ll get a few good nights worth of sleep until then.

all that is needed is to adjust Earth's orbit correspondingly.

People always assume that the earth sits neatly in the dead center of the habitable zone around the sun. The reality is that 95% of the habitable zone is outside earth's orbit.

Its obviously beyond or capabilities today but we could nudge the earth outward using a string of large asteroids in the right orbits.

We’ll all be watching that collision from Heaven, God willing.

It looks pretty spectacular already. ;)
