We all know Al Gore invented the Internet. This guy is a sham, a fraud, a liar....unlike Al. (/s)
Garbage! Sounds like one of those net neutrality hippies. Private enterprise created the technology we have today. Government meddling or this jerk would have hampered Henry Ford, Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell. Abolish the EPA! And the FCC! And CNN!
So should Hula Hoops. It’s not like they are even expensive. The government could provide everyone with at least one Hula Hoop and it would contribute to the fight against obesity, children would be more healthy, white folks would be more coordinated, new jobs for the poor in hula hoop factories... it just goes on and on.
Tell that to Google and Facebook.
This reminds me of an ex-Houston mayor named, “Bill White”. While he was running for office he said, “I think that everyone should have internet access and I’m hoping that the business community will step up and provide it.”
I smirked and said to myself, “Good luck with that, Bill, you idiot!” ;-)
Tell that to Vin Cerf, who was done creating the internet 20 years before that. Hell, I was transmitting monthly business data over the web in 1988, maybe I'm the inventor!
Web browsers are free, so he should consider his mission complete.
Seems a misleading headline. I don’t see where he says the net is a right, but that it’s use carries with it certain rights. Since I see these as the same rights I expect when writing a letter or visiting the library, I don’t see the problem....
Of course, I could be wrong....
Next stupid idea!?
the internet is a medium through which we express ourselves.
in the US, this would be covered by the first amendment.
in other countries... it’s up to your govt to decide whether or not you’re allowed to have it
Brie should be a Human Right. And beer.
Pornographers and advertisers rejoice.
Oh, noes, it was algore or tiny tim or pee wee herman or a spider that launched the web.
The DARPAnet, the fore runner to the internet was in use in the 70s and colleges were using it in the early 80s.
By 1990 this jerk was watching internet browsers all over the world, and what ever he lunched on, was fish and chips.
Seeing as how it was first developed and used as a convenient communication tool on high speed ARPA net comms between universities, likely on government sponsored contracts, etc. it is understandable how he might feel this way.
IOW an erstwhile tool for academic elites that has been overtaken by the common citizen, business, capitalism, enterprise and freedom. They can’t stand it and advocate government control.
A human right, eh? Does that mean that I have to pay for other peoples’ access? Why not just say what he means: take all money from those who earn it and give it to those who lob around waiting for their EBT cards and obamaphones.
I believe a Telescreen is a human right.
A right is something that government is not allowed to interfere with your doing, like the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
An entitlement is something that somebody else (typically the taxpayers) is compelled to pay to provide you with it.
In the US, even the homeless have internet access. Just walk into a library and ask to use one of the PCs.
There are no rights to other people’s services. That’s called slavery, and liberals used to oppose it.
What do we mean by a “human right”? That everyone is entitled to have someone else provide access to the internet, without any cost to the person? Who, then, bears the cost, because there is a cost associated with internet access?
There can be no right which requires anyone else to act, work or pay for what is claimed as a right.
