Indiana man found dead after attacked by pet pit bull on Christmas Day

An Indiana man was mauled to death by his pet pit bull on Christmas Day, Portage police say.

Edward L. Cahill, 40, was discovered on the living room floor by his girlfriend when she returned from visiting relatives for the holiday. Cahill was unresponsive, NBC Chicago reports.

Authorities were called to a home in the 5500 block of Tulip Avenue at about 8:14 p.m. Cahill was found dead on the floor covered in blood and with multiple lacerations on his face and arms, the Portage police report. A county coroner pronounced Cahill dead at the scene and determined his cause of death was from a dog mauling.

According to Fox Chicago, Cahill's pet pit bull, "Fat Boy," was at fault. Police say the dog was aggressively barking, growling and lunging at officers. A stun gun and an animal control pole was used to get "Fat Boy" under control.

NBC Chicago says the couple raised their dogs since they were puppies, however "Fat Boy" has consistently been aggressive. The dog bit Cahill and his girlfriend's son in the past, the police report adds.

“Pitbulls are aggressive and not particularly bright.”

It seem like pitbulls have some kind of switch in their brain that when flipped turns them into vicious killers. The ‘switch’ apparently can be flipped for no reason at all.

Depends to a degree on the breed and also the breeder.

But A well trained dog will behave despite the breed.

“people” who have Pit Bulls, especially after they have bitten, GET what they deserve!

Sorry but a dog's behavior is a reflection of the lack of proper training on the part of their owners......

In the case of this particular story, there is no way a properly loved and trained dog is going to turn on its owner as this one did........

I'm sure both you and other dog owners would agree that Golden Retrievers are one of the most easy going and lovable dogs to own.

I would normally agree until I met a friend's GR one day. It was the first one I had ever witnessed growling for no reason but then again, my ex-buddy was smacking it in the face because it wasn't behaving properly..........

Fortunately for the dog, it was given back to the animal rescue agency it was originally found in.

Not meaning to argue but don’t bet on it

I have experience training dogs to protect

It comes natural only to a few working class males ....males who still hang loose

Now say do chihuahuas need to be trained to growl and bite if you mess with them when they’re eating...lol...no...lord no

But most dogs are simply not ingrained protectors.....not anymore

They are more like under 40 american men raised on video games

Its in them but has to be brought out

Ditto. They are sweeties. It’s the owners that need shooting.

You might be right. I had a girl lab that was VERY protective. Both my boys have been mellow. The one I have now has a great bark, but he’s yella inside.

Ashley Obama has a dog. Don’t you remember? The friend of the working class has some incredibly expensive Portuguese water dog that was given to him by the Kennedys

Years ago I had a girlfriend who got a St.Bernard as a rescue animal. Initially “Snuffy” seemed to be a sweetheart. She was very attentive and affectionate. But some unpleasant characteristics started to creep through. She didn’t like men with dark hair, men who wore sunglasses or glasses with black frames, and (especially) blacks.

We put her through obedience training and she did well, and we could leash her up and walk her but she had to be watched like a hawk. After she snarled at some kids I made sure not to let her be around kids at any time. After she lunged at one of my brothers who had come to visit (she leapt through a plate glass window to get at him) I put her down.

I was told by a vet that Bernards had gone through a period of popularity and some unscrupulous puppy mils had bred inferior dogs in an attempt to cash in.

Pit bulls are aggressive dangerous animals. Some people seem to like that sort of pet and want them to be nice and blame aggressive behavior on bad training and all sorts of excuses. As long as pit bulls and their owners stay the heck away from me I guess they can do what they want.

It’s not only that. Pits bite and don’t let go, they’ve been bred to do that. So maybe owner get lucky and their dog never has a break and bites. But if it does, it’s more likely to kill.....

Mine is seven years old and is one of the gentlest of the twenty or so dogs I’ve ever owned. Pit Bulls are bred to please. They will do what they are trained to do. If you don’t train them to attack and don’t let them be abused they are as gentle as collies.

The same thing is happening to Great Danes now. They are rising in popularity and idiots are breeding them trying for “rare” colors and extreme size. Of course they aren’t paying attention to disposition. Something the size of a Dane with a bad temperament is an extremely dangerous animal. I’ll only get one from a breeder who raises show quality dogs. They will have some pet quality dogs, but they are still quality animals with the proper temperament.

No matter the breed, some dogs, just like people, are no good.
