Petco removes Chinese-made dog, cat treats from stores

Petco said Monday it has removed all remaining Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its website and stores nationwide because of concerns they have sickened thousands of pets and killed 1,000 dogs in the U.S. since 2007.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says initial tests have not connected the Chinese jerky and rawhide treats to the illnesses, but the San Diego-based company and its rival PetSmart vowed in May to ban the snacks.

Petco is the first national pet retailer to pull the treats from its 1,300 stores. Phoenix-based PetSmart Inc. said Monday that it plans to have them off shelves at its roughly 1,300 stores by March.

That was pretty rotten of Petco, pretending to trust Chinese food for dogs.

I think Petco was obligated under contract to keep the Chinese stuff on their shelves until now, otherwise they would be sued.

Every pet owner knows Chinese stuff is crap.

Since 2007? That’s EIGHT years ago. Couldn’t they have removed them sooner than this? Some of that stuff smells horrid. (I have a friend who used to dump all her unliked pet treats on me. I’d keep them a while and then dump them in the garbage.) My dog preferred human treats. Just plain, old bread and cheese.

Aren’t Chinese dog and cat treats SUPPOSED to be made of dogs and cats? Yummy!

I thought this had already been done?

I’m careful about my pets’ food, all of it made in the USA.

My sister lost her precious dog “Kirby” from tainted pet food (what her vet told her) - his kidneys failed and the vet said he’d seen several dogs in the area in the same predicament.

Weren’t the Chinese also caught selling tainted baby formula??

I now realize why my PetCo (California) was cleared out of treats on Sunday morning.

I read labels after my sister’s dog was killed by tainted Chinese dog food - only buy if it’s made in the USA. Yes, it’s expensive.

OMG, yes.

Couldn't believe the smell - DH said to NEVER bring it in the house again. Big dog AND little dog buried the smelly treats in the yard - first time the little dog ever buried anything. They knew not to eat the treats.

“There’s no shortage of pet foods and treats made in the USA.”

turns out that the bulk of treats “Made in the USA” are made with the exact same Chinese ingredients used in the Chinese “treats” that are killing out pets if you take a close look at the package labels.

We nearly lost our 5 year old greyhound to bad food. When we rescued her, her foster parents had her on Purina ProPlan, so we stayed with that for years and no problems. Then we noticed the packaging got changed and when we opened the new bag, the food smelled dramatically different. Our dog got really ill with gastrointestinal bacteria and after doing a little digging, we discovered that Purina was bought by Nestle and then changed the dog food formulas and was using fillers from...China.

It’s in the article.

I still prefer Petco to PetStupid anyway. (Originally, PetStuff, which I like better.)

Every product I buy takes a few moments of my life away because I read labels. If it is a food, I look to make sure there is no soybean oil in it... or MSG... though they now just call MSG a variety of innocuous sounding names like “yeast extract”.

Everything from socks to appliances... I look for a manufacturer that is not China. It costs me a little more... but I would rather support an American business providing jobs to American families.
