City to ban foam takeout, delivery food containers in environmentally friendly push The ban, which will start July 1, covers foam take-out containers, packing peanuts and plastic cups.

New Yorkers’ beloved foam takeout and delivery food containers will soon be products of a bygone era.

Mayor de Blasio — finishing off an initiative begun by his predecessor — will announce a ban on the environmentally unfriendly material Thursday, according to The New York Times.

The ban will start July 1 and cover foam packing peanuts as well as plastic foam cups and takeout containers.

City Hall declined to comment when contacted by the Daily News. But a former official for Mayor Bloomberg gave the administration a big pat on the back.

You might like those starch peanuts, but people who make their living shipping things hate them.

but people who make their living shipping things hate them.

My company ships millions of packages a year, 99% of which is void fill paper packaging and the rest is bubble wrap. I see no need for Styrofoam peanuts.

It sounds like a crony deal to keep the NYT afloat. Without the packing peanuts, people will have to use newspapers again.

How could they ban styrofoam packaging from outside of NYC without violating interstate commerce laws?

I,too, dislike the use of loose plastic peanuts because they do litlte to protect the shipped item.
But banning everything you or I don’t like is hardly the best solution.

It's funny how libs in government never think to make anything voluntary in order to judge public response and see if it's got a chance at success before making yet another stupid, useless and unenforceable law! Guess a response like that might have a smidgen too much logic to it for their reactive taste.

Say, maybe we should make testing a law before it becomes law the law of laws! /Snark!

And I hate those damn clingy peanuts, too. Anyone see the Duck Dynasty episode in Scotland where Willie unboxes a painting [of himself, natch] and a gallon's worth of those frickkin' peanuts start blowin' around the parking lot? Hope they cleaned them up!

"Yep, I agree peanuts are horrible. Can’t even vacuum them up!"

I used to get shipments every week with packing peanuts in them. We called them "Packing Tribbles" if they got out of the box and onto the floor they multiplied exponentially and soon would fill the entire store from floor to ceiling.

Now single-cigarette sellers will have a new commodity to traffic. Good thing NY is dedicated to solving the city’s most urgent problems /sarc.

More black markets are sure to evolve.

I am going to need to start an underground import business to smuggle Super Gulp sized sodas, ciggarettes, ammunition and clips and now styrofome cups and packaging.

But banning everything you or I don’t like is hardly the best solution.

But there are BETTER solutions that are better in every way that don't make such a mess. I used to work on west 27th, which is in Chelsea and the damn things were literally everywhere, all the time. They are unsightly and I'm sure they aren't doing the storm drains any good. I don't know what environmental benefit there is for getting rid of them, but if there is one, it's a bonus.

Don’t get caught driving through NYC with styrofome in your vehicle. Better toss it before you hit the city limits.

The only positive I can see in this upcoming disaster is the return of the iconic NYC blue coffee cups with Greek statuary designs.

They’ll have to use more expensive items and raise the price for the consumer.

It’s a brilliant strategy by Deblasio. Rich NYers care about two things. Money and real estate. Deblasio tried to pull this crap wth getting rid of the horse drawn carriage rides so that his peeps could get the land.

Think of how many businesses are going to close because takeout and delivery of food in NYC keeps many of the food businesses alive. When they go out of business, the store will be empty, the building will lose value and in comes the real estate moguls to buy on the cheap. Deblasio’s peeps

Follow the money.

Anybody remember the mid 1970s when stryo peanuts were replaced by popcorn for awhile? It lasted about as long as it took them to discover that popcorn attracted rodents, less than one year as I recall.

Just silly nanny statism.

But it does make me wonder: why is Dunkin' Donuts the only coffee shop in the city that uses styrofoam?

The paper coffee cup in blue and gold with the Parthenon styling has been a mainstay in NYC for decades.

The paper cup is more "green" - but it is also cheaper, much easier to stack and store, harder to puncture, and cheaper to customize as well.

Was it supposed to be iconic? A brand differentiator?
