Wasted youth and the best comedy movies - a minor break from the daily fare(Vanity)
Me | Me

Okay so I recently hired a few recent college grads in technical roles and a conversation was struck up at the end of the day. The conversation was a result of a missed movie reference during another conversation earlier in the day. The type of thing where you assume some level of common culture so you don't have to explain in more detail.

What follows in my comment was the result and follow-on question for my fellow Freepers.

Some I haven’t seen, but:

Animal House: Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

Blues Brothers: We’re on a mission from God.

Blazing Saddles : But I shoot with this hand.

Young Frankenstein: Hump? What hump?

And my favorite Carol Burnett is the parody of Gone With the Wind and the famous drapery dress complete with drapery rod. When asked by Harvey Korean as Rhett Butler where she got the dress: Oh I saw it in a window...

At 66, that sort of thing happens to me more and more frequently.

Worse ... in my capacity as a school board director, I have a mind set (I pray the Lord will use to the advantage of the kids) .. that causes raised eyebrows

True case ... still dealing with it. btw;

The GSA is the gay/straight alliance and it is a public school club formed in California in 1998 to ..

"GSA Network was founded in 1998 to empower youth activists to start Gay-Straight Alliance clubs to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools."

And if you go there ... it is nothing but political activism and many links to direct a youth to BE activist in his school

I found out about it in MY school district about 5 months ago and research and conversation(s) with community members have started a grass(roots) fire

I have told the board twice now, that when I was a misguided yute, I dabbled with SDS (students for a democrat(ic) society) and the gasps ... when I explained I had SEEN this communist, subversive language before ... from 1969, 70 .. etc and that this GSA club in our school was a PAC

Still workin' on THIS one folks .... pray for us.

“I didn’t get a HARUMPH out of that guy!” was always useful in any meeting.

"Work, work, work. Work, work, work. Work, work, work. Hello boys. Have a good night's rest. I'll miss you."

Have all the Thin Man series and Harvey I adore. Felt that was a bit far back even for my senior engineers though - HA!

I forgot about office space.

I usually get a good laugh when I suggest using a baseball bat on malfunctioning office equipment.

The Dr. Gillespie thing was so obscure it vanished into it’s own black hole.

Life of Brian. ‘Keep on the sunny side...’ My bluegrass gospel group is singing this and every time we start it I crack up.

And one of IMHO one of the most criminally underrated comedy movies ever, BASEketball.

“You’re excited, feel these nipples!” - Best thing Bob Costas has ever done.
