The 'American Sniper's' preposterous post-Katrina New Orleans story: Jarvis DeBerry(barf alert)
NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune ^ | 1/21/15 | Jarvis DeBerry

Chris Kyle, the now-deceased Navy SEAL who is celebrated in Clint Eastwood's movie "American Sniper" was a proved liar. Jesse Ventura, the former military man, wrestler and governor of Minnesota, sued Kyle before he died, claiming that he defamed Ventura in his memoir, "American Sniper." Kyle claims to have punched out Ventura in a bar after Ventura bad-mouthed the troops who'd been sent to Iraq. Kyle was killed before the trial, but a jury determined that none of what he had written about Ventura was true and awarded Ventura $1.8 million.

Because he's a proved liar, we should be awfully skeptical about Kyle's claim that the U.S. government sent him into New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. They perched him atop the Superdome, he said, and it was from there that he picked off 30 looters in the city.

A June 2014 Washington Post report about Kyle's "unverifiable legacy" doesn't outright call the celebrated sniper a liar, but it nudges the reader toward that conclusion. After including a quote from one of Kyle's officers who said, "I never heard that story," the Washington Post writes, "Does that mean it didn't happen? Who knows.

Brandon Webb, one of Kyle’s sniper school instructors, recently talked about when Kyle told him the story about shooting people during Katrina. He said that Kyle was so convincing that he believed him.

He said it was only later that he really thought about how improbable the story was.

And, indeed, that Webb, who now makes a living writing about this sort of thing, decided to keep the story to himself for a year after first hearing of it. Two months after said source died, incidentally.

IOWs Kyle never made any such claim.

Chris went on to tell me that the bulk of the guys he knew directly had racked up over thirty kills between them near and around the Super Dome.

And even in this hearsay story from Webb Kyle never claimed to have shot 30 people in NO.

Mr. Jarvis DeBerry of the Times-Picayune refers to Chris Kyle, saying "Because he's a proved liar, we should be awfully skeptical about Kyle's claim that the U.S. government sent him into New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina."

Ok, Jarvis. If I buy your premise, is their anyone else we can think of who might deserve just a smidgeon of this type of skepticism? Anyone?

How bout this, Jarvis: If you like your Times-Picayune, you can keep your Times-Picayune.

Absolutely absurd. Where are the bullet riddled corpses? No reports of such corpses floating in the New Orleans receding flood waters were EVER reported. . . so in addition to a cadre of silent snipers, we have to add a cadre of clean-up artistes, rushing around, un-noticed in the disorganized chaos, finding the bodies of the looters, and secretly sneaking them out of New Orleans and disposing of them. . . all the while the government was having it's hands full doing everything it could to get LIVING people out!

This just doesn't pass the smell test.

Regarding Jesse Ventura all witnesses agreed that A)Ventura was running his mouth like an asshole and B)Ventura wound up on his back bleeding. I guess the widow couldn’t prove Kyle’s claim that he was the one who put lil’ Jesse on his back so she had to pay the scumbag.

The smear is not that Kyle shot looters. The smear is that he lied about shooting looters. See posts #6, #7 and #24.

What would be the purpose of secret killings of looters by sniper??? The whole purpose of killing looters while looting is to let other looters know that there are CONSEQUENCES to their choice to loot. . . but if you shoot the looters and don’t let anyone know you’ve done it, there is no reason to do it besides the personal satisfaction that there’s one less looter. That does not discourage the practice. As a policy, this makes absolutely no sense. Politically, it has no “upside” and tremendous “downside.”

Smells like either urban legend or propaganda spread by political operatives.

“skeptical about Kyle’s claim that the U.S. government sent him into New Orleans “

The writer is lying. No evidence shows that Mr Kyle ever claimed to have done this.

They perched him atop the Superdome, he said, and it was from there that he picked off 30 looters in the city.

Well clearly he didn’t achieve enough. Why only 30 when there were millions down there? I can’t stand lazy snipers who cannot shoot more. 30 piffff (SARCASTIC)

The smear is not that Kyle shot looters. The smear is that he lied about shooting looters. See posts #6, #7 and #24.

This could be a hypothetical discussion between a group of snipers. . . talking about how easy it would be for snipers to get a handle the looting problem in NOLO. Put a squad of them on the Superdome roof and start taking them out. This could have been overheard and then confabulated into the story that it actually happened. . . and someone decided to give it some verisimilitude by converting it into a conversation with Chris Kyle. After all, if HE said it, it MUST be true, RIGHT? There is no guarantee that the guy quoting him is honest, is there? Or the guy quoting the guy quoting Kyle? Too far removed from Kyle. . . who cannot defend or explain what he said.

Brandon Webb, one of Kyle’s SEAL sniper school instructors, is one of two men who claim Kyle told them the story. According to their accounts, it wasn’t a hypothetical, and it wasn’t something Kyle heard about. It was something Kyle said he’d done. Webb said Kyle was so convincing that he believed him, and it was only after he began to think about it that he began to realize how implausible the story was.

Have you ever told a gullible friend a wild tale just because he was gullible and the little devil on your left shoulder convinced you it would be really funny? I haven’t done that in a few decades now but I have done that.

There were things that happened in new Orleans after Karina that no one will ever know about.

There were sniper teams doing battle with other criminal sniper teams.

There were people who were caught looting, painted with a blue L, executed right then and there, and their bodies were incinerated. They simply disappeared.

It was complete civil breakdown involving the worst of the worst people that this planet has to offer, and order had to be restored quickly.

I don’t imagine that was done by asking nicely.

I have a friend of a friend who has a cousin who went to school with Jarvis and he says Jarvis told him he once killed 3 white girls and stuffed them in a trunk and sunk them in the Gulf. Really. He says Jarvis and his buddies used to do that all the time and they wracked up over 60 kills.

Has just as much validity as some guy saying some guy who was close to Kyle knew guys who shot people at the Superdome.

Give me a break! Some things just scream BULLSH*T so loud you wonder how anyone takes them serious.

My brother got up from the table at some joint in San Diego years ago to go to the john- while he was gone his buddies [a mix of SEALs and local police, had convinced the waitress serving their table that he was a “Navy assassin.” Evidently she was a bit of a lib and they thought they would entertain themselves by seeing how stupid she was. They told her how many kills he’d racked up, and she believed every word.

My brother knew nothing of their little set up of the gal and when he returned to the table the gal brings their drinks and then glares at him real hard, and she blurts out, “So how do you like your job?”

My brother, a special boat guy thinking of how much he liked the boats responded immediately “This is the best damn job I’ve ever had!”

She spit out some venomous comment and stormed off leaving him wondering what that was all about while his buddies laughed.

From the video & live reporting , Kyle must have run out of ammo.

New Orleans was a target-rich environment of looters post Katrina.
