Thanks. I was sort of thinking (avidly, I might add) in seeing something truthful about this time in our history.
I was desperately hoping it wouldn’t get contaminated with youthful and uneducated (read, no actual research into what happened) portrayals.
Still, even if it’s been ‘hipped up’ to relate to a younger uneducated demographic, it still might not be so bad - hopefully. I’ll still at least watch the first episode and hope for the best.
Regardless, thanks for your opinion.
I watched part of it too. I got bored with it but I didn’t get upset about the portrayal of Adams. That’s because I gave up thinking the History Channel was really about history a long time ago. Their shows are basically modern action movies or soap operas dressed up as period pieces. So it wouldn’t surprise me if, in the next episode, Sam Adams single-handedly takes on an entire squad of Redcoats.
The only thing that bothered me was the prolific use of the word “bull$hit”.
I watched Schindler’s list on AHC then switched over to the History channel and immediately wished I hadn’t. It left me with the impression that our founders had more in common with the “hands up don’t shoot” looters than the rest of us.
“The Patriots” on AHC is more my style. Narrated reenactments of historical events minus the acting and badly faked accents.
As far as history based drama is concerned, AMC’s “Turn” is the way to go despite the screeching of the FR church ladies who are still whining about a 12 second sex scene in a whole season. (its a drama after all) Plus the known history of the Culper spy ring is surprisingly accurate for a big money production.
I recorded the first episode. After I watch it I will decide. But I doubt I’ll continue as I have so many more things to do besides watch TV.
I never watch anything as it comes on. I always record.
I’m with you. I didn’t make it through the 1st hour, before I went looking for police chase videos. Doing modern metro drama in colonial costume was just more than I could stand. They also must have thought that in the age of an income tax, we were all incapable of understanding how taxes were levied and collected in Colonial America. I rewatched the American Hero Channel’s (AHC) series in the director’s cut version and thought it very well done. They paid attention to the little details and kept to the historical account. It needed to be at least six hours though and not just three.
Next episode they have Sam going to what would come to be Alaska in order to mine gold in a swamp while logging and catching seafood. There also might be ghosts and bigfoots involved.

Sam Adams the focal point hero in a “history” show sponsored by Sam Adams Brewery? Sure, no favoritism there.
I know he was important but....
He drank, you know.
PJ:
All-in-all, I was pushed to “watery eyes” when young Christopher was killed simply because there were so many unsung heroes (Dr. Warren would make a GREAT study, yes?) that gave so much for the grand-ideal of human liberty.
I was embarrassed; I have a son-in-law (father of my AMERICAN grandchildren) who has served 2 tours in A-Ganny and will be returning to the States for Ranger training.
I keep asking myself...what are ^WE^ handing over to him in 2015 and beyond? How does he inculcate patriotism (love for the USA) in my grandchildren?
We have strayed far afield; it makes me cry.
I encountered the commercials for the series, and found them rather off-putting. I love history and the subject matter, but there’s something about modern “film language” (the direction, the editing styles, the action set-pieces, the detached-irony in delivery of lines, etc.) that I just find too maddeningly corny.
They took some Hollywood license, to be sure (Hutchison was not the governor in 1765 for example, he was the Lt. Governor and Chief Justice, then became governor later).
Being from Boston, and having just read a book on James Otis, I think they did capture the times very well, and the causes of the anger. And the events portrayed were pretty accurate for the most part.
Yeah. I was pretty disappointed in it too. I don’t think I’ll be bothering with the next two episodes.
I watched it. I thought it was pretty good, but I am no history buff. I will never know enough. I do see some things happening in this movie that are going on right now. Things never change. Kinda like the Who song, Meet the new boss, Same as the old Boss!.
I wish they would start a “Pawnstars and Pickers” channel. Then maybe they’d have some history on it.
Obvious mega-BS just from the TV promos. Time better spent taking a serious nap.
Hey, if ABE LINCOLN can whack vampires, Adams can be a ninja warrior!
I heard them use the Rolling Stones’ song “Paint It Black” on a trailer. I changed the channel.
