Meet the First Plus-Size Model(Robyn Lawley) in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition History
Time ^ | Feb. 5, 2015 | Laura Stampler

Posted on 02/06/2015 11:29:05 PM PST by Reaganez

That’s because Sports Illustrated was announcing Lawley’s appearance in the magazine’s highly anticipated swimsuit edition. And while Lawley’s bikini-clad figure seems like a natural fit, her inclusion is historic. As a U.S. size 12, she’s the curviest model to ever appear in the edition, and she’s doing it while wearing a bikini from her own swimwear line. While a U.S. size 12 would typically qualify as plus-size in the fashion industry — even though the average American woman is a size 14 — Lawley doesn’t like to focus on labels. “I don’t know if I consider myself as a plus-size model or not,” Lawley, who is represented by Wilhelmina Models, says. “I just consider myself a model because I’m trying to help women in general accept their bodies. ”

That was about a “re-imagined” cover.

This is about the real thing.

She is almost as big as those mountains, incredible.

We haven't seen her like since the 1950s.

Not quite 50 ft.

More like 6’2” or 6’3”.

She’s a big girl, alright.

So big they had to make the magazine larger just to fit her on.

So big, her picture is larger than my monitor.

Well, you have to admit though, 50 foot is pretty close to 6 foot.

A six foot woman, a 50 foot woman, is there really all that much difference?

Who is going to quibble over 40 or 45 feet?

She’s very beautiful. And size 12 is just a size I blew through years ago, it seems I didn’t stop there long.

Hubby asked me what did plus size mean and I told him it was probably anyone bigger than an 8, at the outside.

I applaud SI for featuring this lovely gal, maybe it will help them reach out to women. Like me. For whom size 12 has become “aspirational”.

She’s very beautiful.

She most certainly is.

Being 6'-2" she will either need to find someone equally as tall, or with the confidence the size of King Kong. The average man in the US is 5'-9.7"

Now, if her personality is as attractive as her looks, I'd be willing to "overlook" the height issue :)

What's been bizarre about the SI "Swimsuit Edition" is that almost all of the models look like they would fall apart if they entered the water, wearing "swimsuits" that would fall off it they actually tried to swim in them. I'm a swimmer and always was annoyed that the swimsuits in SI weren't for swimming.

This model, besides looking like she has enough strength and muscle to swim, is wearing a swim suit that is designed for a real day at the beach.

Ideal weight is individual. The media and fashion should be promoting healthy, active, attractively proportional women as the standard of beauty.
