My parents forced me to eat beets. When I threatened to run away, they said if I do, they were going to move and leave no forwarding address.........

Sounds like my folks. I’ll bet when your dad slammed on the brakes, he put his arm out to hold you back, so you wouldn’t fly into the dashboard. And your mother had the nerve to eat, and maybe even the audacity to serve gluten to you and your sibs.

You’ll always remember your first deer .... and gutting it on a cold November morning. Or sitting by your dad’s side, learning how to load the ammo for the hunt.

Did you force your own spawn to eat what was on their plate?
My parents never did that, nor did I with mine....just expected them to *try* a taste of something new ....and if they didn't like it, that was OK .... along with a lecture on how our taste buds change as we get older and an admonishment to try it again, sometime.

One of the guys in first grade smoked cigars, and yes we had 55 gallon drums that we rolled inside of down steep hills.
We would all go home and watch Gilligans Island.
To: McGruff
Be home by dinnertime was the general rule.
If we were leaving the property (we had 7 acres of woods with a creek flowing through)we gave our parents a heads up.

It was cauliflower for me. They made me eat it and I ran outside and threw up. Last time they forced me to eat anything.

The dramatically increased level of supervision expected of parents is one reason why many people don’t have larger families.
It is exhausting to closely supervise and chaperone one or two, when you can’t just let kids run around outside.

Played in creeks a mile from the house, and even rode a bike there all our selves! Even played in a river a few years later. Went to the beach all by ourselves.
Heck, parents would be arrested for that now.
We ain’t free no more.
