Companies can't find workers who can hold a conversation or show up on time

It's not about finding workers; it's about finding the right workers.

According to the latest supplemental survey from the New York Fed's manufacturing and business leaders surveys, employers in the New York area are facing two main problems: finding workers who can show up on time and workers who can hold a conversation.

The survey showed that in April, 65% of manufacturing employers had difficulty finding punctual workers and 60% had trouble finding workers with interpersonal skills.

Among business leaders, a broader survey group, 42% had trouble finding punctual workers while about 48% had trouble finding workers with interpersonal skills.

These results also play into a theme we've been hammering on: As the labor market improves, employers won't have trouble finding workers, but will have trouble finding the right workers.

And this survey highlights another trend in the labor market: wage growth.

Even 10 years ago, I was on a jobsite loaded with Mexican drywallers. The “Anglo” running the crews said it was an amazing thing to get so many for $50 a day and a cheese sandwich for lunch.

I always tell my kids (who think I’m a total bigot) that there are stereotypes for a reason. To turn the pointed finger to my own ethnic group, in a beach town in your state there’s an Irish owned/run supermarket. They used to import kids from the Auld Sod for the summer. No more. Now their summer employees are largely Eastern European. When asked WHY, they said because the Irish kids would go out drinking and not show up for work. (I know that’s frequently a problem with Russians, as well. Maybe these kids are from other Eastern Euro countries).

The article is specific that it is the NYC area; Americans are fleeing from here in droves.

Newark and NYC are in an area that is being abandoned by Americans (that is why both NY and NJ have had de facto amnesties for decades). Employers are leaving as well, leaving behind those of us locked in mortgages, immigrants (illegal & legal), the permanent welfare class, and government workers.

I’ve noticed that more and more departments are build around an American “scribe” (the literate worker) with a group of low-information drones.

That story highlights why so many companies will simply re-locate to another country; who in their right mind keeps paying for that nonsense? Companies prefer doing business where someone with that work ethic simply starves to death.

Outsourcing plays a huge role in this, because Americans can’t find work in decent jobs in the area that is the focus of the article (NYC metro area). As the older Americans flee, there is no “next generation” of Americans to take the jobs that require such basic skills; instead, the states impacted simply traffick foreigners here to keep the classrooms, housing, and store aisles full.

Here in northern NJ we just lost Mercedes HQ to Altanta GA; those unemployed Americans won’t find comparable work here, and they’ll leave (taking their children with them). NJ will simply bring in foreigners (of any stripe) to replace them in the school systems, and prospective employers will find those “replacement Americans” unemployable.

That is a big problem with union jobs in the NYC area; people wnt 6 figures for basically working part-time. At my job (non-unionize office stuff), many older white women want to work the barest minimum of hours and it has spread to everyone else - “salaried” workers no longer work unpaid overtime because as long as those women won’t do it (regardless of how high their positions are) management can’t take action against the rest of us. It wouldn’t just be a reverse discrimination case brought by men; there would be a racial angle due to the number of non-whites (of both genders) that were expected to work harder/longer hours than those white women.

He and I weren’t working together at the time. We worked together back in 1979-80. He was on my crew and one of my trainees. He learned how much fun it is to run lazy bums off from me.

His boss wasn’t too happy when he did it but about a week later his boss came around to his way of thinking.

Even worse when the rig they were building was taken offshore and being moved to a location a big piece of the rig broke off because the old welders weren’t just lazy they were a pack of screw ups.

Could have gotten a lot of people killed had the rig started coming apart while it was drilling.

I had a guy accuse me of being racist.

Company spent an entire day on a witch hut questioning my crew and anyone that had been on my crew trying to find out if I was a racist.

Everyone agreed I hated everyone equal.

When they finally got around to questioning me I asked what it was that I had done that was supposed to be racist.

Nobody had bothered to ask the guy what I had done that was racist.

I let them know if they didn’t tell me what it was that was supposed to be racist I was walking, I wasn’t putting up with the crap.

The supervisor drove out and asked the guy what it was that I had done that was racist and he found out I was a racist because I wouldn’t let the guy sleep on the job.

Because the witch hunt had cost my crew a day of production, my crew had to work on what would have been their first day off in over a month.

The following weekend my crew didn’t just get one day off they got a 3 day weekend.

The problem is not that companies can't find people with good interpersonal skills.

The problem for these companies is that people with good interpersonal skills and good work habits are able to find jobs that pay better than what these companies are willing to offer.

I’ve had employees tell me they weren’t coming to work there was no gas in their car, or because they just didn’t feel like it and wanted the day off.

Lol!! I had an employee call me at 3 a.m. once, drunk off his butt to tell me he wasn’t coming in for his 6 a.m. shift and that he was quitting.

You know how it ices and snows EVERY WINTER in DFW... same thing. “I can’t come in today because it’s a snow day.” All week long. Yet I run into the guy at CVS... he could get out to buy cigarettes.

I know supervisors who don’t hire them because of the built-in chip on their shoulders; it simply isn’t worth the hassle, so they hire Hispanics or white women instead (since they are equally-preferred “minorities”).

Where I was working, blacks that hired in and didn’t want to work under a white operator were put to work under black operators.

It didn’t take long before the black operators had enough of the crap of having people that didn’t want to work being dumped on them so they told the office to just fire them if they didn’t want to work under a white operator.

Operators were all on salary not hourly and got incentive pay, sort of bonus, based on billing.

Lazy bums, regardless of color, were costing them money and they got tired of loosing money every month.

I pity the black operators in that scenario; good for them for pushing back. In this tight economy, most people that don’t want to work are finding themselves out of work; as companies pare costs, they are the first to go...
