The happiest countries in the world, according to neuroscientists, statisticians, and economists

An international team of economists, neuroscientists, and statisticians just released their third World Happiness Report, which measures well-being in countries around the world to help guide public policy.

Switzerland topped the list of the happiest nations, and all of the top eight countries were in the global north. Switzerland was followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

The United States ranked 15th, behind Mexico and Austria. Still, that's a slight improvement from the last report, in which the US ranked 17th.

The World Happiness Report isn't without a scientific basis.

One of its key findings, based on decades of neuroscientific and psychological research, suggests that keeping the brain happy relies on four main factors: 1) staying positive, 2) recovering from negative feelings, like a bout of sadness or anger, 3) caring about and spending time with family and friends, and 4) being mindful and allowing ourselves to feel "captured" by emotions like awe or joy.

Here are the 30 happiest countries from the study. Each color represents one of the six key factors (key below):

Switzerland topped the list of the happiest nations...

Must be their hot chocolate. And, and...something else!

Switzerland I can believe, but Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina?!
There is something wrong with this list.

I don't know whether the study - besides examining the neurological basis of happiness - also takes into consideration such factors as low expectations.

To wit: The lower one's expectations, the more-easily they are fulfilled.

RE: But Zimbabwe should be tops on the chart!

They’re not even in the top 10 least happy (maybe it’s because they live in a really beautiful country, made ugly by politicians and people).

Here are the 10 least-happy countries, with Togo topping the list:

1. Togo

2. Burundi

3. Syria

4. Benin

5. Rwanda

6. Afghanistan

7. Burkina Faso

8. Ivory Coast

9. Guinea

10. Chad

Also Mexico. If it is such a happy country how come 10% of their population is in our country illegally?

I’ve noticed something odd about the happiest countries. They seem to be substantially lacking in a certain demographic.

"The happiest countries in the world, according to neuroscientists, statisticians, and economists"

It is a list of countries that give happiness to neuroscientists, statisticians, and economists. It is a list of nerd countries.

RE: Mexico ahead of US, and yet they leave their country in record numbers to live here.

Mexico has a population of 122 million. Most of the troubles (e.g. drug cartels, gang wars ) in Mexico occur at the NORTH of the country ( near our border ). That’s probably where most of the outward migration is occurring.

I am willing to bet that the rest of the country (e.g., Cancun ) does not have that problem at all.

Several polls have reported Mexicans as being happier than Americans. I think we should take them at their word and forthwith prohibit any more Mexicans from moving here. After all, how can you encourage someone to move from a happier country to a less-happier country?

RE: I’d be happier if the conservatives were in charge.

Switzerland, the number one on the list, restricts immigration and is very picky with who they allow to live and work there. The country does not have a minimum wage. They also require their citizens to be prepared for battle by owning guns.

Is that conservative enough?
