NEW YORK (AP) PepsiCo says it's dropping aspartame from Diet Pepsi in response to customer feedback and replacing it with sucralose, another artificial sweetener commonly known as Splenda.
The decision to swap sweeteners comes as Americans keep turning away from popular diet sodas. Competitor Coca-Cola said this week that sales volume for Diet Coke, which also uses aspartame, fell 5 percent in North America in the first three months of the year.
Executives at Coke and Pepsi blame the declines on perceptions that aspartame isn't safe. That's even though the Food and Drug Administration says aspartame, best known by the brand names Equal and NutraSweet, is "one of the most exhaustively studied substances in the human food supply, with more than 100 studies supporting its safety."

It’s easy to dismiss an opinion because I rashly chose a site to make a point during a busy work day. There is good data out there, but that one page does not dismiss my opinion. You are right about supplements. And correct about the depth of Aspartame testing. And I used to be as defensive of those artificial sweeteners. But that’s where the similarities terminate.
It’s Ok to have an opinion. But preaching about a manufactured food product without corroboration is disingenuous, as there have been a fraction of tests on sucralose vs. aspartame and no long term studies on sucralose. And restating manufacturer claims about chlorine is, in a word, ‘shill’.
Again, if you want to have an opinion, that’s great. If you want to preach about a highly-processed manufactured food product and preach misleading study statistics and manufacturer claims, you better have some other data to back up your assertions.
I woke up, no longer consume those compounds and feel healthier for it. I suppose I’m imagining it.../s
Aspartame has three components. Those same three components are also found in higher quantities in bananas. To fear Aspartame is to fear bananas. Again, irrational. Sucralose isn't metabolized by the human body and is eliminated "as same." How can something be deleterious to your health when it isn't even absorbed?
Feelings are fine, but please don't try passing them off as fact.
In all of her readings, did she come across this information:
Aspartame is made up of three components. The Aspartame in a 12 oz. Diet Coke contains the following amounts of those three:
Phenylalanine - 90 mg
Aspartic Acid - 72 mg
Methanol ------ 18 mg
A 3 oz. piece of grilled chicken, eaten with a cup of tomato juice, contains the following:
Phenylalanine - 1,060 mg
Aspartic Acid - 2,400 mg
Methanol ------ 80 mg
An average sized banana contains the following amounts of the three:
Phenylalanine - 60 mg.
Aspartic Acid - 146 mg.
Methanol - 21 mg.
Can your spouse explain why these three things are dangerous when consumed in a Diet Coke, but not in cooked chicken, tomato juice (or apple juice or wine, or beer) or in a banana?
Doesn't make much sense, does it?
Me too. I remember the one and only time I had some aspartame in a drink when they first came out. My first thoughts were “this is terrible” and “poison!” The taste remained in my mouth and throat for hours and I felt ill with a chemical feeling inside.
I’m not irrational. I don’t need to defend my own life choices.
If you find the link I quickly.posted during a busy work day to be false, back up your assertions with data.
Otherwise you are parroting manufacturer BS and are, in fact, a shill.
Your comment is so full of BS it’s pathetic.
Aspartame tastes like plastic. Sucralose does not.
IMO
Forget the seltzer......Just drink the Tanny............
I remember when there was hardly any difference in taste between diet drinks and their non diet originals............
Methanol?
THAT’S POISON!!!!!!...............
Every time you drink apple juice, tomato juice, cider, beer, wine, or most liquor, you are consuming methanol. Fortunately, it's in small enough amounts that it is easily cleared by the liver. You eat foods and drink beverages every day that contain dangerous chemicals, but not in the quantities that are harmful. The dose makes the poison. Same as it ever was.
Here it is... http://m.nowfoods.com/BetterStevia-Organic-Liquid-Extract-2-fl-oz.htm
I bought a 2 ounce bottle last July and it’s still half full. A little goes a long way. I put two or three drops in tea and it’s perfect.
