“even though the Food and Drug Administration says aspartame, best known by the brand names Equal and NutraSweet, is “one of the most exhaustively studied substances in the human food supply, with more than 100 studies supporting its safety.”
Oh, if the FDA says it’s safe, then that should settle it for everyone, right?
My default position is that the FDA is presumptively wrong until proven otherwise.
Try stevia.
Many of these are "sugar alcohols". Mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol. The human gut doesn't handle them well in the upper GI. When they get to the lower GI, the bacteria handle them just fine. Acid and gas. Diarrhea. Many of them are toxic to dogs.
There is a handy acronym to remember for avoiding foods that make you sick: FODMAP. Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. The sugar alchohols falls into the polyol group.
A good article (PDF) on FODMAP
“as if Splenda or Stevia wouldnt be as bad”
Has stevia gotten some bad press? If so, I haven’t heard about it.
You probably already know this - but if you don’t; many grocery stores carry Coca Cola in glass bottles from Mexico. It has real sugar. About $1.19 each at WM. I think they are 16oz.
Also, I read recently that Coke is going to bring out a version in the US with real sugar. I’m sure it will cost more. The artificially-high sugar prices in the US are the reason that all the soft drink makers switched to high-fructose corn-syrup. HFCS is cheaper.
There's no need for FDA involvement to know Aspartame is safe. Diet soda containing Aspartame is no more dangerous for you than a banana or a piece of grilled chicken with a cold beer or a glass of wine.
Beat me to it! I remember cyclamates.
You must be a troll.
EVERYONE knows Aspartame is bad bad bad for you.
[ AIR ,as I recall, it is Dr Martini who can tell you ALL YOU WANT TO KNOW about just how BAD BAD BAD it is for you. ]
I also generally avoid eating or drinking anything with aspartame in it on a regular basis, since I've found if I drink/eat anything with aspartame in it regularly, over an extended period I start to get headaches and mild chest pains. Stop with the aspartame, and the problems go away. Aspartame every now & then seems OK.
After dropping aspartame 6 or 7 years ago, I switched to using sucralose (Splenda brand usually). Haven't had any problems at all, and like the taste. For instance, I get the little squirt bottles of it and use it in coffee and cole slaw. I also only drink diet soda, when I drink it at all, sweetened with sucralose. Only problem is that soda with sucralose is REALLY hard to find in my area. Almost everything available is sweetened with aspartame. One good source is the Waist Watchers brand found at Weis Markets in 2L bottles. Hopefully this Pepsi move will transition a lot of other brands & flavors too.
I don't know what to trust anymore per the press and their conflicting "health studies." All I know is that Splenda/sucralose works great for me and is much better for me health-wise than either sugar or aspartame based upon personal experience.
“I only drink diet soda.
Cant stand the taste of sugary sodas.”
The so-called sugary sodas these days have corn syrup, which gives me gastric distress. The old saccharin tastes foul and is like Ex-Lax to me. I have since forgone any sweetened drinks, and instead use a Sodastream using water and fruit juice.
>>Has stevia gotten some bad press? If so, I havent heard about it.
That was the point of my post. When it becomes a commercial success and a part of capitalist products on a large scale, the Progs and their pet scientists (i.e. “Grant Whores”) will “discover” a problem.
If Aspartame is bad for you then so are bananas. Grilled chicken with a cold beer is also bad for you. Vegetables and fruit are bad, bad, bad then, too. Gotta be careful what you read on the internet.
Dr. Martini....LOL!
So once again just 5 percent of a group, Diet Pepsi drinkers, are considered in making a decision that may well result in the other 95 percent choosing to stop drinking Diet Pepsi. This change will affect the taste of Diet Pepsi and when that happens I plan to switch to some cheaper generic diet soda. The only reason I drink Diet Pepsi is I got use to it. If the taste changes I can just as easily adjust my taste to a cheaper generic brand. I figured out long ago that it’s not that one soda is that much better than its generic it is just a matter of letting your taste buds adapt and then that new soda becomes your favorite. So go ahead Pepsi. Let 5 percent rule your business and the rest of us will find something else to drink.
I bet the complainers use Gatorade to water their garden because it has electrolytes (it’s what plants crave).
I had to give up all artificial sweeteners and caffeine because of migraines. I cannot decide who’s more unhappy, me or the family!
Perhaps. But as an early defender of Splenda and seeking to cut out all highly-processed foods from my diet, I was shocked to find out how Splenda is manufactured. Much as I was shocked to learn about ‘canola oil’. We all are subject to and influenced by advertising/propaganda at some point (guilty, here); most of us eventually wake up.
Without regards to all the other hype (all of which every non-sugar sweetener in this country has promoted one way or the other, including all the testing BS) the process described is factual.
I used to consume it daily in my diet soda (Diet Rite); I choose not to now for health & teeth reasons as a result of the facts, not emotional reaction.
Brawndo, you mean.
