All ancient cults were fertility cults, because agricultural cultures were afraid the land would not produce lots of crops, and pastoral cultures were afraid the animals would not reproduce lots of healthy offspring.
Ancient Jewish thinking was unique in this regard, because it began by assuming that their I AM would provide, and then responded to that provision with worship, offerings, and sacrifice--and partly as a result, did not tie any of their worship practices with sexual practices. Christianity builds upon this notion by saying that the Christian life is a response to the blessings that God has already provided in Christ, rather than actions that have to be taken in order to obtain blessings and avoid curses.
