Breakup fears for massive (Larsen C) Antarctic ice shelf: study

Paris (AFP) - The largest ice shelf in the Antarctic peninsula is being thinned by warmer seas and air and could catastrophically break up, scientists said on Wednesday.

The loss of the Larsen C ice shelf could occur within a century but an earlier collapse cannot be ruled out, with major consequences for global sea levels, they said.

"We now know that two different processes are causing Larsen C to thin and become less stable," said Paul Holland from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) who led the new research.

"If this vast ice shelf... was to collapse, it would allow the tributary glaciers behind it to flow faster into the sea. This would then contribute to sea-level rise."

Even if the entire Larsen C ice shelf melts (a big if), it is still only sea ice. Ice is roughly 90% as dense as water, which is why 10% of an iceberg is visible. Assuming all that ice melts, the 10% that was above the water line gets added to the ocean. But since the whole ice shelf is now liquid it also has 10% less total volume. So the net effect of a melted iceberg on the water level is zero.

Or are they assuming the shelf is acting like a dam, holding back the antarctic land glaciers or something?

I hope they don’t get stuck in the ice while studying how fast it’s melting. Idjits!

Other locations in the Antarctic have record levels of ice, I believe.

The Antarctic sea ice last June set an all-time record high with an “excess” (more sea ice than normal for that date) of 2.116 million sq kilometers - an area larger than than all of Greenland. Today, the “excess” Antarctic sea ice is not as big - only 1-1/2 times the size of Hudson Bay. About 1.8 million square kilometers. 8<)

Averaged over all of April, the average Antarctic sea ice set a new monthly record also.

East Antarctic land ice is gaining mass as well - all but for three glaciers on the edge. West antarctic ice sheet is steady, but for three glaciers on the peninsula going up towards south America. But that is only 3% of the continent's area. (Pine Island and the Thwaits glaciers the ones they like to publicize. Because they are the only ones losing mass.)

Yes they doo..

Record Antarctic sea ice a logistic problem for scientists
http://news.yahoo.com/record-antarctic-sea-ice-logistic-problem-scientists-071717226.html

Growing sea ice surrounding Antarctica could prompt scientists to consider relocating research stations on the continent, according to the operations manager of the Australian Antarctic Division.

Rob Wooding said that resupplying Australia’s Mawson Station — the longest continuously operated outpost in Antarctica — relied on access to a bay, a task increasingly complicated by sea ice blocking the way.

“We are noticing that the sea ice situation is becoming more difficult,” Wooding told a media briefing on Monday ahead of two days of meetings between top Antarctic science and logistics experts in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania.

Yes they ‘fear’ that the ice shelf act as a brake, slowing the land glacier, however, with the ice shelf gone storm may further inland on the glacier and therefore reduce sea level

I anticipate that algoron, that genius smarter than Einstein (millions of degrees just below the surface of the Earth don’tchaknow), will soon tell us how the SUVs in America have triggered these volcanos under the ice shelf that are melting it from the bottom up ...

That land glacier is a very, very small fraction of all of Antarctica’s 14 million sq kilometers.

Most of which is covered by land ice that is gaining mass.

If you want to have some fun with a global warmunist, ask them to figure out how long it will be before Cape Horn is closed to shipping by Antarctica’s expanding sea ice? (if current rates continue as they have since 1992, Cape Horn will be blocked in 8-12 years by sea ice.)

In other areas of the Antarctic, there’s record ice. This is the way that things work. Ice builds up, pushes out, and then breaks off near the ocean. I don’t suppose that anyone has considered that this is just a natural process...nah.

Won't happen. Its 2500 miles of open ocean with a strong circumpolar current and it would have to freeze over to a southern latitude similar to South Carolina in the north.

“The record busting growth of Antarctic ice is threatening the viability of Australia’s Mawson Antarctic research station.

According to The Australian;

Satellite observations show a new daily record being set for Antarctic sea ice every day for the past two weeks. Annual records have also been broken every year for the past three years.

Rob Wooding, general manager of the Australian Antarctic Division’s Operations Branch, said expanding sea ice was now causing serious problems.

Last year, fuel supplies were flown to Australia’s Mawson base by helicopter because the harbour had failed to clear. Dr Wooding said the situation was “unsustainable”.

I wish all these “experts” would learn some basic physics:

http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/110645/why-does-ice-melting-not-change-the-water-level-in-a-container

This used to be high school level stuff about a half century ago.
I suppose there’s some kind of ‘global warming’ exception to physics or something now days.

That is where I stopped reading. These idiots sometimes can't accurately predict tomorrow's weather, and they think they can tell us what might happen in 100 years? What idiots.
