Perhaps the greatest marketing blunder in history?

This is apparently a graphic used by Microsoft to tout their forthcoming OS upgrade, "Windows 10." It's seems the braintrust in Microsoft's marketing department are a little weak on 20th century history, otherwise they'd have realized the phrase "One product family. One platform. One Store." sounds like is was ripped from the pages of a political propaganda manual.

Yes, the fools in Redmond have -- I give them the benefit of the doubt for now -- unwittingly paraphrased one of the most notorious political catchphrases of all time:

Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer – "One People, One Empire, One Leader"

One of the Nazis' most-repeated political slogans was Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer – "One People, One Empire, One Leader". Bendersky says the slogan "left an indelible mark on the minds of most Germans who lived through the Nazi years. It appeared on countless posters and in publications; it was heard constantly in radio broadcasts and speeches." The slogan emphasized the absolute control of the party over practically every sector of German society and culture – with the churches the most notable exception. Hitler's word was absolute, but he had a narrow range of interest – mostly involving diplomacy and the military – and so his subordinates interpreted his will to fit their own interests.[9]

I’ve got a window icon on the lower right corner of my Windows 7. It’s a reservation for a free update to Windows 10. What is everyone doing with it? I usually wait until all the bugs are out before I update. I miss my XP-PRO. I find it easier than this Windows 7.

As far as I can tell, doing that "reservation" says you agree to accept a forced 3GB download when Windows 10 is released. Microsoft will "push" it to your computer. Then you're expected to install it, overwriting your existing Windows 7. First, of course, backup your system. Backup, backup, backup and check to make sure the backup is good.

HOWEVER... if I were you I would wait for a couple months before updating, give them a chance to find and fix the worst of the bugs. It'll be free for a year after release, so there's actually no rush, even though they will pressure you.

If that's the case, then I would definitely say to wait a while. In the meantime, you might take a look at a computer that has Windows 8 on it and try to use it. See what you think. You may be surprised, either pleasantly or not, but Windows 10 is a lot more like Windows 8, than it is like Windows 7. And it's nothing like XP.

I expect there will be numerous add-on products that try to make Windows 10 more like Win 7 or Win XP, because a ton of people still crave the simplicity of the old XP interface.

You know I am getting a bit old (70) to learn a new system. The technology is for the young. I have been away from it for so long that all I do is fix problems and that is a challenge now. Thank you for your input, I really do value it. I did remember that you all never updated until after several months allowing for time to get any big bugs out.

Well, yes and no. I'm 63, working as a Network System Admin for a software company, and I find I can still learn things. Maybe in 7 more years I'll feel differently, but maybe not... my Mom turns 91 in a month and she's active on Facebook and some other programs she's been using for years, using MSDOS back in the 90's, then WinXP and then Win7, but then she got a Win8 system and she hated it, so she got a MacMini. That took a while to get used to, but she's coming along.

So I'd say, don't give up, do what feels like the right thing to do, at any age.

Yep, like they say, you can tell the pioneers (early adopters) because they've got all the arrows stuck in 'em.
