John Robinson, of North Park, said he’s tired of neighborhood pets leaving waste in his yard and is hoping the candy will prevent dog owners from walking pets near his property
A man in San Diego’s North Park community has dumped chocolate chips in his yard in an effort to deter dogs, but the act is upsetting neighbors. Frustrated with neighborhood dogs leaving waste on his lawn and dog owners not picking up after their pets, a man known as "John" recently scattered several pounds of chocolate chips in the grass in front of his home on Lincoln Avenue and in a nearby easement. Over the last several days pet owners have been steering clear of his property, with some neighbors afraid the candy will make their animals sick. Some concerned residents have called San Diego County Animal Control and the San Diego Police Department to complain, saying this is threatening the lives of their pets. Through social media and a neighborhood phone app, Fisher has been alerting local pet owners of the chocolate chips left in John's yard. Fisher has a two-year-old golden doodle named Lucy that she walks with regularly. She is now avoiding John’s property but fears unsuspecting animals will stumble upon the candy and get sick.
John agreed to an interview Tuesday with NBC 7, if his face wasn’t shown on camera. He said irresponsible dog owners are constantly not picking up after their pets and leaving piles of waste in his yard.
He said he has left signs in front of his home – including a note written on a yoga mat that suggests an animal could be electrocuted if it urinates on his tires.
However, those signs don’t seem to work, John said, so he came up with the chocolate chips idea.
“They can walk on the other side of the street,” he said. “I am tired of it. People disrespect my yard; I'm tired of the stuff.
John insists chocolate won't harm the animals. Still, there is a large school of thought that says it can be toxic to dogs and can lead to illness and even death, depending on what kind of chocolate it is and how much a dog ingests.
John said he plans to mow the grass in the next few days to get rid of the remaining chocolate morsels. However, his neighbors want something done about the situation immediately.
San Diego County Animal Control Deputy Director Dan DeSousa said animal services investigators were notified of this incident by North Park residents on Monday.
He said the investigation is ongoing, and no further details would be released at this time. On Wednesday John said someone had broken the mirror on his car in what he believes is retaliation against him putting the chocolate chips in his yard.
My step-daughter’s King Charles Spaniel ripped open a hanging shopping bag and ate almost a whole bag of Hershey Kisses and it didn’t phase her. The vet said to keep an eye on her and bring her in if she got sick. The vet was more worried about the aluminum foil wrappers. The dog only weighs about 12-14 pounds.
I think I'd talk to a dermatologist first.
I’ve never seen a dog have issues with chocolate.
The guy is going to create more problems for himself due to his inability to cope with a minor issue like a man.
He’s only trying to stop people letting their dogs poop in his yard? I don’t want people’s dogs peeing in my yard either. It kills the grass.
I have one neighbor who acts as if it a privilege for her dog to mess up the verdant, manicured lawns in my neighborhood (there are only 3). We have put up signs, dumped cayenne along the curb, and yelled at her. When she walks her dog, she looks around, and if she doesn’t see me or my two neighbors outside, she makes a bee line for our yards.
You gotta use the right kind of food to get their attention. It’ll work if you bait them right. In this case tho I’m talking big traps. And meat scraps will catch a loose dog every time. I’ve also caught Possums, badgers, marmots, skunks, raccoons, magpies, and a few others I’ve no doubt forgotten. Now getting a skunk out of a live trap is a trick——just sayin’.
The guy with the rifle must be a newbie. My tractor has a rifle rack. Just not fully dressed without one-—rifle or rack. This is varmit country and it’s often that something needs killing. Either kill it or go get the tools to fix the damage it’s gonna do.
I have two chihuahuas. One about 2 pounds, the other around 4 pounds.
While at Trader Joe’s one evening, I bought a nice imported chocolate bar for myself. When I went to look for it, it was gone from the bag. All I found was the wrapper.
Two very tiny wawas and a good sized candy bar did not make them sick.
I have heard that dogs eat spoiled meat and other things because their intestines are very short and digestion is fast.
I’m sorry, but anyone intentionally attempting to teach a human a lesson by poisoning their dog is, in my book, an ahole. Pretty much by definition.
And by the same token, so are the dog owners who allow their dogs to crap all over someone else’s property.
I much prefer your between dusk and dawn solution to anything having to do with hurting the damn dog which doesn’t know any better.
I’m perfectly fine with setting mousetraps on the lawn for the jerk owner to step on. Only problem is, the dog might step on them, too.
See, that’s the thing...harming the innocent animal to get at the owner is wrong. Also disgusting.
Spoiled meat?
They’re still carnivores, after all. In the wild, wolves will save their meal to eat later—the decomposition that happens in the interim helps them digest the food better—it unlocks several nutrients, IIRC...
But the thing is, he ain't poisoning their dogs! So long as they stay away from his lawn, they will be just fine, and that is the point. If he were walking down the street, feeding neighborhood dogs chocolate, I'd be first in line to beat his tail to a pulp. But he's not. He's putting a substance of HIS CHOICE on HIS LAWN. He is not feeding the dogs. As long as the dog owners respect his private property rights, this is a non-issue.
Setup a motion activated system, attached to a sound system. When it gets tripped, it immediately plays a warning message, something along the lines of trespassers will be shot in 3...2...1...and then a massive barrage of gunshot sounds. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I would love watching some worthless dog owner flipping the freak out over that!

I’ll type slowly so you can understand ... the sign is for the owner, the source of the problem, but the property owner’s solution is to poison the dog. See the disconnect there?
A human trying to teach another human a lesson by poisoning the dog is dumber than the dog and its owner put together.

I think you are being intentionally dense (meaning I don’t think you’re dense, but appear to be playing at it for effect on an internet forum).
You completely recognize that the dog owner is the issue, but seem to want to pretend that the property owner’s solution is not directed at hurting the dog to teach the dog’s owner a lesson.
They do have “safe” antifreeze but you have to buy it, specifically.
The killer stuff is still around, as I’m sure the antifreeze meatball contingent here, knows.
I would never punish a dumb animal for the sins of its dumber owner.
Cruelty to animals is never justifiable.

One neighbor lets his stray cats roam at will and besides the toll on native wildlife, their crap in my yard has brought us hook and whip worm issues.
I have to worm all the dogs with Panacur just to keep them healthy.
