7 Reasons Women Are Getting the Heck Out of Dodge and Seeking Their Dreams Overseas
Sixty and Me ^

Posted on 08/03/2015 2:09:53 PM PDT by lulu16

What do you do when you want something more and different than you’re getting in your home country? For an increasing number of 60+ women, the answer is to move overseas.

According to the data we collected through our website, Best Places in the World to Retire, there can be a better life out there, if you are willing to uproot and reinvent yourself as an expat in Belize, Nicaragua or Panama.

In addition to the over 5,000 answers and 200 stories on our website, in early July, we released Expats: Expectations & Reality, the first in a series of studies reporting the results of a survey of expats, mainly from the U.S. and Canada and living in Panama, Belize and Nicaragua. For Sixty and Me, we broke out the results just for women, 45 and older (the closest age category we had).

The following are seven smart and reasonable aims these women happily pursued in these small Central American countries.

Eastern Europe is beautiful, the mountains and the rivers and the quaint towns. Have not been to Poland, but man, they export gorgeous girls.

Maybe that’s because you haven’t traveled to these places and done hundreds of hours of research, and talked to many many ex pats living it.....you haven’t talked to the 60 year old couple who lost everything in the crash in 08 living in Vegas....and now moved to Ecuador where they are tan, rested, healthy, and living the dream on nothing per month. Or the lady from San Diego who lost her business due to technological advances and moved to Nicaragua where she has plenty of savings to live on the beach until her SS kicks in, and then she’ll be in fat city. Or the two 30 something businessmen who got sick and tired of taxes and bureaucrats ruining their homebuilding business in the US who moved to Costa Rica and now run a development business AND a charter fishing business....living the dream.

You act like no one’s done this. You act like it’s all theory. You act like it’s a big deal. Hell, moving to Central America still puts you closer to relatives than those families who are east coast/west coast......no one’s asking you to do it, but there are those of us who have researched this extensively. It’s not for everybody, but it’s not fools gold, it’s not too good to be true. But there are PLENTY OF BLOGS and sites from ex pats who are honest about the good and the bad.

But hell, life in this country sucks at 25K a year, period, end of discussion. A lot of people are limited to that.

This is the husband of Lulu, RKBA Democrat. You’re exactly right. If we are unwilling to vote with our feet, the progressives will be able to lord it over us indefinitely.

America is a way of living, not a place. There are plenty of people who live in American who are not “American” in their outlook (POTUS, anyone?), while there are lots of people overseas who are just as American as anyone here. Strategically, as Sun Tsu said (The Art of War), you don’t fight battles you are sure to lose. It may make sense to regroup in various places and in various ways. Don’t make it too easy for them.

have nothing but a 2 thousand dollar or so SS to live on...that’s poverty in the US...that’s upper middle class in Central America.

What are the tax implications, if any, of cashing your SS checks and living in another country?

AMEN PREACH IT! I say ex pats ARE some of the new patriots. I've often said America is an idea, NOT a piece of real estate. All of this is true. And if I do move, I'll keep fighting the fight. I'll have kids here. Maybe grandkids one day. I'll do my writing and interviews and so on...all I need is good internet...and that's almost everywhere. Not every patriot is called to this, but many are.

And really, don't tell me a union thug third generation in Michigan or Ohio is a good American. BULLSH-T! They're socialists. Dittos the entire Democrat Party. If that's "America' - I'm not interested.

Depends on the country, but generally you'll pay US tax only on SS checks or anything else you earn in the US - dividends, pensions, etc. Many countries have programs for retirees, pensionados as they call them, where you get great added incentives because they want those folks to move there. And if you earn money over seas, it's usually not subject to IRS taxation - especially if you run a bar or bed and breakfast or snorkeling tour or whatever....all local revenues...

One woman’s quote-—”-—— a life where you actually have the kind of friends you did in the 1950’s in the States.”

What the hell does THAT mean?

Just a gentle reminder friends for those who are enjoying their time of Free Republic today to contribute to our favorite conservative forum.

Last week my husband connected the computer to the big screen and watched Ted Cruz eviscerate Sen. Turtle McConnell on a youtube post. Afterwards, wanting to read the best commentary, we pulled up the FR site and read the posts together.

Next morning, I made another contribution. I never want to be without my fellow freepers. All of us, I am sure, feel the same. Give what you can. Jim is very gracious whenever I contribute. It is always my pleasure.

Well keep in mind that everyone is in a different situation. If you live in some parts of Central America, are young and poor and have no prospects....your best hope may be north of the border.

But if you’re looking at retirement and the 08 crash has hollowed out your American dream - then moving south is perhaps better.

One thing that every single ex pat I ever talked to says - and I’ve talked to many from many different parts of Central and South America - is that they are so much healthier, so much less stressed, so much younger feeling. These lifestyles are walking life styles, more of the food is fresh out of the ocean or off the vine or out of the ground, and the money problems are not there. These are the kinds of factors that can add many quality years to your life.

If I can’t bring my guns with me, then I’m not going.

“Why should I travel? I’m already here!”

FWIW, in a small Southern state a stone’s throw from the ocean, a place which time and liberals forgot.

I hear you....retiring in a cold climate is just not anything I’d ever think of doing. One of the healthiest things about retiring to a place that’s either warm or temperate - is that you don’t have any of the cold related afflictions. It’s also a helluva lot cheaper to maintain an energy bill and a wardrobe too.
