Music [trivia] question: Green Acres theme
Way too early on April 12, 2015 | Self

Posted on 08/12/2015 1:22:10 AM PDT by re_nortex

In another thread, I came across Donald Trump doing a passable job of the Green Acres theme. Here in the Dallas area, the Ticket sports station has their own variation of the theme.

My question to the vast collection of musicologists out there in FReeperland is about the instrumentation deployed on that familiar theme. What in the heck are those instruments that gave it such a distinct, rustic flavor? Was it Moog synthesizers or traditional string and woodwinds? I'll admit to being pretty much of an idiot when it comes to the "behind the scenes" stuff involved in creation of music as those who've encountered me on such threads can attest! :) It's all pretty much voodoo and magic to me.

Confirm re the distortion - it was mentioned in several articles about the theme.

There definitely is a xylophone, and the electric guitar has some distortion on it.

What little I know about music instruments and electric guitars was piqued by Don't Worry, a big hit when I was in college. The "fuzzy" guitar literally leaped out of the radio in my dorm when I first heard it. Never before was there anything like it to my ears. There are a number of stories (probably some are myths) about how it came to be. And later, in his live performances, a steel guitar was used for that interlude.

I try to avoid using Google (and Bing). If it ain’t on FR, it’s not worth knowing. :)

I think it’s harmonica. Have you ever heard a Theramin? It sounds spooky.

Well, that’s one way to keep a lid on your intellectual exposure.

I knew the Moody Blues used that instrument but by the time they came on the scene, I was in my mid-20's and my tastes had fossilized into the pre-rock era (mostly country and Southern Gospel).

Theramin ? Isn’t that what they gave senile folks to ward off fits of rage ?

Google posted a picture of Caesar Chavez on Easter Sunday a few years back. It was reported here on Free Republic and a number of FReeper stalwarts urged a boycott of that site. Honestly, I find that the search feature that Jim and/or John crafted here works beautifully, especially since the criteria can be refined to the desired category.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like a jug instrument might've been used as backup (although might be mistaking it for the harmonica).

I agree about the search feature here, but I spend a lot of time looking up odd things on the internet. To post a thread here asking for replies is just a waste of time.

Hey...watch it there sonny! In our Nashville conversations, you know how old I am. So lemme straighten you out about my senility...and tell you a thing or two or three...

:)

Well, you’re more than free to ask Jim or the mods to delete this entire thread since it was a waste of time. I’ll accept it in good stride and in the friendly, helpful manner that I’m certain you meant your critique. Hereafter, I’ll make a point to avoid such things as this since I owe you respect due to your tenure here.

Why would I do that? Post what you wish. Maybe your time is less valuable than mine. No biggee.

Which is probably why you think "Green Acres" is contemporary pop culture in the first place.

Thanks, I’m an old retired guy and have plenty of time. I thought this would be a fun (and harmless) diversion from weightier matters. Plus, it’s an opportunity to be lighthearted with a number of FReepers I’ve gotten to know over the years. Some of the threads can turn rancorous, of course given the times we’re in, and a bit of levity can be good to heal wounds. Anyway...thanks for the responses and I appreciate the spirit in which you meant it.
