This Dad Wrote Out a Common Core Math Check to the School and It’s Brilliant

An Ohio dad wanted to let his son’s elementary school know how frustrated his family is about Common Core math. Douglas Hermann from Painesville posted a picture on his Facebook page of a check made out to Melridge Elementary School with place value chart in place of the dollar amounts:

If you’re unfamiliar with this method of teaching math, check out this video of a little girl demonstrating how to add three-digit numbers using both the traditional method and the Common Core method:

Hermann also wrote on his Facebook page, “It’s sad when I can’t help my second grader do his math homework. Mental math and ten-frame cards? Common core sucks!”

The Ohio father said that he didn’t actually send the check to his son’s school, but rather, posted it on Facebook as “a slam on Common Core.”

He’s not the only parent sounding off about Common Core math on social media:

Tried to help my third grader do his basic math homework and showing the work but I can't because… #CommonCore

How come my BabyBoomer peers cannot help their grandkids with their #CommonCore math? MATH. We're NOT talking algebra here.

I had her memorize the multiplication tables this summer. I drilled her almost every day. #commoncore math is a nightmare. Conceptualist.

Having a wide, who is teacher, trust when I tell you that almost all teachers hate Common Core education. Demonizing teachers is off the mark on this issue. Blame Jeb Bush and his cronies and follow the money trail.

Sorry-didn’t mean to demonize teachers-more so the system which is power hungry and invasive.

I do feel like the new ways were created in order to take power away from the parents and to actually dumb down our kids.

I can see why teachers would hate it. It makes no sense at all and only complicates something that should be so simple.

I will never understand why they replaced tried and true teaching techniques with this stuff.

Is being a good parent WORTH not giving your kids a good education?? My parents made sacrifices to send us to Catholic schools, including driving 45 minutes each way, sometimes 2 or even 3 times a day!!

My point is that we should not have to pay to send our children to private schools. These public schools are our schools, paid for with our tax dollars. The fact that so many conservatives have simply given up and resorted to private schooling or home-schooling is part of the reason our public school system has been taken over without a fight by liberals inculcating American children with social nonsense and an inability to compete with even Third World nations in mathematics and science.

I completely understand the desire to make sure that one's children receive the best education possible, and doubtless it will pay off when they grow up. But they'll grow up to become well-educated citizens of a ruined nation populated mostly by fools who learned nothing but some left-wing bromides in public schools. Concerned parents - especially those who can't afford to send their children to private schools - need to become more involved in the education system and fight nonsense like Common Core.

I don’t “speak” Common Core. Can ANYONE tell me how much that check is for? And (asking a LOT), explain it? TIA!

And by the way, any private school which accepts any federal funding (for instance, through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) is also subject to Common Core standards.

Many Private and religious schools have adopted Common Core curriculum because the "smarter or nwea" testing alignes with college testing. Also they are going after home schoolers so don't throw that in.

No where to go so we ARE fighting it.

Common Core is a deliberately and maliciously created crime against humanity.

When stupidity hits reality ...

I wonder if the elementary school was able to cash it?

If they tried he bank teller probable laughed her head off.

I was teaching my Grand Daughter how to find the area of regular polygon with 12 sides knowing only the radius of the circle in which it was inscribed.

Took her around 3 minutes and cost me $20, never wave a dollar in front of a 12 year old.

Catholic school parent here as well. Not the pinnacle of education, but leaps beyond most public schools in the things that matter. I’m so glad my child pretty much missed all this nonsense. There were a few glimpses of it last year, in eighth grade, but none in ninth. I think we’re ahead of the wave just far enough to avoid this wall of stupidity.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

“if this guy wants to keep his kid in a public school that his taxes pay for.”

I think that was the point; Mr. Hermann shouldn’t even CONSIDER keeping his kid in a public school. Yup; he’ll get screwed on the tax issue. All parents who care enough about their kids to send them to private schools, or home school them, know they have to “eat it” when it comes to taxes. But they do it because they want the best for them in the future.
