Why Would Cruz Insult New Yorkers?
RealClearPolitics ^ | 24 Jan, 2016 | Steve Chapman

When it comes to votes, the state of New York is a gold mine. In the 2012 presidential election, more than 11 million New Yorkers were registered. By itself, New York accounted for half of Barack Obama's margin of victory in the popular vote over Mitt Romney.

You might think Republicans who want to win the White House this year would be trying to improve that performance by appealing to residents of the Empire State. But Ted Cruz is doing the opposite: He sneered that Donald Trump would be bad for America because he "embodies New York values." If Cruz gets the nomination, the state's residents, from Easthampton to Buffalo, won't forget the insult.

But you know what? Cruz doesn't care. He has no reason to care. That's because of a curious artifact known as the Electoral College. The fact that a major candidate is happy to write off so many Americans is just one more piece of evidence that this system is a bad way to elect a president -- and that both parties ought to make it a priority to abolish it.

Under the Electoral College, we don't have a national election for president. We have 50 state elections, and nearly every one of them is winner-take-all. New York hasn't voted for a Republican for president since 1984 -- and even if Queens native Donald Trump heads the ticket, it won't do so this year.

Why Would Cruz Insult New Yorkers?

Why do New Yorkers insult the rest of us?

Rush Limbaugh warned Romney in 2011 that if he forgoes the flyover country base it might win him the nomination but would cost him the general election.

Frankly I see a replay on steroids.

Why not insult this gaggle of smart asses who think they are on a strata above we po’ old Southern folks and they haven’t much use for the Midwest, as well.

Now, in Californicate it’s an entirely different matter. North Easterners dig those left coast perverts the most.

Because it plays well everywhere else and NYers are not going to vote for him anyway?

NY voted for Reagan in 1984, but now Cruz is so certain he cannot win, that he is dismissive?

It would be one thing to do so quietly, by not devoting resources there.

It is quite another, to openly do so.

He made a mistake. One is supposed to like the entire country and he a president for the entire USA even if certain states have a majority of people who don’t support you. You are just Obama but going the opposite direction by being playing up divisions. I too have disliked various areas of the country. But have come to see that good people, for whatever reason, end up or were born in those places. Doing a generic statement can be taken to mean you hate everyone in the area.

I do understand why comments like Governor Cuomo’s would cause a response like Cruz gave. But he was just raking Trump over the coals because the lives and works in New York City and has had to by off politicians to get his way. Nothing more nor less. He wouldn’t have mentioned New York if Trump were from another state.

That's because of a curious artifact known as the Electoral College.

We wouldn't have a Constitution without the Electoral college. It is the concept of Federalism that the author forgets. Without the Electoral College, the Dems would be the permanent majority party. The Dems have won the popular vote in five out of the last six elections with Obama winning the two highest vote totals.

Thanks to mass immigration and minority birthrates, the Dems are on the cusp of being the permanent majority party. Elimination of the Electoral College will seal the deal. No Dem would waste their time in Flyover country and the small states. They would concentrate on the urban areas and build up huge margins of voters there.

You hit the nail on the head. New Yorkers are entitled to fair talk just like every other state.

Cruz is getting edgy...and he's got a vicious temper.

Cruz was targeting the lib elites in NYC who elected a governor who essentially told social conservatives to GTFO, and a communist mayor who cavorted with the Sandinistas. WTH did they expect when someone chides their “values?”

NY is part of the democrat caliphate and, like California, is out of reach. So..too damned bad if those thin-skinned elites are feeling offended.

In the primary, yes.

It was one of Cruz’s dumber statements-—I know he was trying to zing Trump-—but if he had just said “Liberal” values, he would have been fine.

As much as a lot of us don’t like CA or NY, I don’t think anyone likes seeing groups of Americans attacked. There is a hope that all people can be made to see the light, and Reagan won NY some time ago. Heck in 2000 (I think) NY still had a GOP senator (D’Amato).

You know the Charlie Daniels line about “Just go and lay your hands on a Pittsburgh Steelers fan?” I think that’s what Cruz unintentionally provoked.

Her Thighness knows that even if she loses the election, whatever money remains in her war chest can be legally donated to charity.

Can anyone guess what charity that might be?

You asked why the boards are so barren of worthwhile commentary lately and full of anger. Comments like this one of yours are why. What kind of broad brush approach says that “New Yorkers” insult the rest of us? A particular person may have, so you know he/she is an idiot. That leaves millions who are innocently living their lives and you have no idea who they are and what they believe.

What you do know is that among them are many Americans, who love their country and are passionate about the wall, and National defense and many of the same things you may be passionate about. The President is for Americans, a man who tries to win by playing off one section of the country and one race or class against another is no better than Obama.

So that comment of yours is one step too far. Perhaps you got carried away by the scent of blood in the air but most of all we should be one family in America. That is how we will regain our country. A House Divided Cannot Stand. Family can have different points of view but when you begin casting out members on broad generalizations you have already lost.

But we don’t care what Trump says. We just want a reality TV star for pres so we can be entertained.
...........................................................

A reality T.V. star is a very small part of the complex Donald Trump. You conveniently ignore all the other talents Trump has. You denigrate a man who has accomplished a great deal in his life. You need to get a grip. NEGATIVISM is destroying this country right along with political correctness. We used to be the CAN DO country. Now we have become ashamed of being Americans and everything in the world is Can’t do this and can’t do that. Trump is a breath of fresh air because he is a pure old fashioned CAN DO AMERICAN. That’s good enough for me!

NY is becoming less and less of an electoral goldmine with each passing year. The exodus from the state has continued unabated, and with good reason - one governor forced to resign, two high-level pols indicted, a current governor that borders on being a lunatic (and is probably indictable), a commie mayor of NYC - I could go on and on, really. Nobody in NY should be lecturing the rest of the country on how this country should be run - this state is an American disgrace.

Note that New York is both a city and a state. The Democrats and Trump supporters both conflated a NYC reference to a statewide issue.

If someone here wants the Republic to be more like NYC please state so with a how and why.
