The love you take

If you want a lap cat, get a ragdoll.
Your average American alleycat was bred for generations to be a mouser not to cuddle.

Dogs are way too needy and high maintenance. When I used to do online dating, if I saw that a woman was a dog lover, or bad pictures of her dog posted, that was an instant deal killer.
My present girlfriend has a Siamese cat that I love. He’s noisy, but at least he doesn’t bark.

If one loves something “5 times less,” does that mean 20% as much? Or do we know how imperfectly a dog loves a human and estimate a cat would love us 5 times less than that. 5 times MORE, I would get. But I never understand doing anything 5 times less. Anyone?

Another blanket statement study. I have had many cats. They are like people: personalities differ widely. The one I have now is a true friend.
The poster who said something to the effect of you get the love you give is spot on.

Nonsense. Just like the “cats are aloof” line.

It all depends on what you want.
If you want a devoted pet, pick a dog.
If you want an fascinating companion, pick a cat.

Cats and dogs is like apples and oranges: they are different. Just as two people show love differently, so do cats and dogs.
Besides, “love” means several different things and so is an inherently ambiguous word.

“...FIVE times less...”?
Twice as small.
Three times shorter.
Four times thinner.
I enjoy the company of a "good critter buddy" regardless of whether it is a cat or a dog, though circumstances have dictated it be a cat for much of my life. After a long day of dealing with what Mark Twain called "the damnable human race," it is particularly pleasant to have an animal pal to either talk to or fuss over regardless of whether or not they understand or appreciate one bit of it.
FWIW, though a defender of cats in general, I tell people that my cat is "like a dog" in her (perceived) fondness for her favorite human.

Well, the chemical reaction test proves what I have always suspected: your dog doesn’t love you. He just loves how he feels when he’s with you.
