Proof your cat loves you FIVE times less than your dog

Are you a dog or cat person? Does a dog's eager friendliness make him superior to an elegantly aloof feline, or vice versa? It's a debate that has divided animal lovers for generations.

Now a new BBC documentary is seeking to resolve the question by discovering definitively which species has the edge: Britain's eight million cats, or its nine million canines.

In Cats Vs Dogs, animal experts Chris Packham and Liz Bonnin team up with scientists and vets to put our two favourite pets to the test in a host of different categories.

Think you know which one will win? Don't bet on it. Here are some of the findings . . .

Dogs: Almost everything dogs do, from excitedly greeting their owner at the door to lying loyally at their feet, seems to be indisputable evidence of their love.

Cats, on the other hand, are more inscrutable and independent. They decide when their owners are granted a stroke or cuddle. Most owners, however, are convinced their puss loves them but just isn't as demonstrative as a dog.

But are they right? Scientists have already discovered that dogs do seem to love their owners -- studies have found that both produce the 'love hormone' oxytocin when together. It's the same hormone that pregnant women release during birth and breastfeeding to help them bond with their baby.

But cats have never been tested for this. So the show asked U.S. neuroscientist Dr Paul Zak to test both types of animal to solve the eternal question.

'We have pretty good evidence that dogs actually love their humans,' he says. 'A couple of small-scale studies have shown that when owners interact with their dogs, the human and their dog appear to release oxytocin.

It's one of the chemical measures of love in mammals.

Not really. I just want this little demon from hell gone out of my life, but it has to be an accident.

It all depends on what you want.

If you want a devoted pet, pick a dog.
If you want an fascinating companion, pick a cat.

The science is settled. There can be no more debate.

My guy urped in his food bowl this morning.

That’s after waking me up with gentle claw taps on my cheek, because the bowl was empty.

But he’s good to have around, so way I can pretend that I’m not just talking to myself all day.

I don’t begrudge you a companion. I neither need nor want mine. It was pawned off on my wife by my son whose fiancé was supposedly allergic to. I very soon found out what ‘allergic’ meant. I’m still pissed at my son.

Cats and dogs is like apples and oranges: they are different. Just as two people show love differently, so do cats and dogs.
Besides, “love” means several different things and so is an inherently ambiguous word.

“But cats have never been tested for this.”

Because they have never allowed it, stupid!

The text at the very bottom says:
She put up a good fight. She fault(sic) to the end with honor. The Dog hid while we were here. I think he is scared of cat.

I have a cartoon drawing of a cat sitting on the floor looking up to a human. The caption reads.......feed me you fool!

Cats are nice but dogs are nicer!

but it has to be an accident.

Easily done. Especially since the little beast is keen to escape and make a break for it. That can be used to explain a missing cat. But first, you have to take steps and be seen by wifey trying to enjoy, love and include the cat in your daily routine. It will take time but it can be done and keep any possible blame off of you.

“...FIVE times less...”?

Twice as small.

Three times shorter.

Four times thinner.

I enjoy the company of a "good critter buddy" regardless of whether it is a cat or a dog, though circumstances have dictated it be a cat for much of my life. After a long day of dealing with what Mark Twain called "the damnable human race," it is particularly pleasant to have an animal pal to either talk to or fuss over regardless of whether or not they understand or appreciate one bit of it.

FWIW, though a defender of cats in general, I tell people that my cat is "like a dog" in her (perceived) fondness for her favorite human.

Well, the chemical reaction test proves what I have always suspected: your dog doesn’t love you. He just loves how he feels when he’s with you.

Yes my neighbor had like seven yard cats. She is down to one. The cat terminator looks like a small coyote or a grey and red mingled color fox. Guess he thinks cats taste like chicken. This critter has eaten most all the ducks in the apartment complex down the road too.

I tell my son that if your cat was bigger than you, you would be on the menu. Not so for dogs...
