Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

Genuinely sorry to disappoint you.

But all these vanity rants are purely theatrical and designed to turn the spotlight back on the writer. How often do you hear anyone here praise Trump for all the good things he's done and the success he's made with career and family? Almost never.

Why? Because the success of Trump makes failed Freepers envious. His beautiful children brings their parenting failures into focus. His courage in taking on the establishment in a way we haven't seen in decades makes their cowardice more obvious. We're all inured to displays of those shortcomings but, on this thread, the author has the utter nerve to protect himself from expected incoming by hiding behind the Bible. That is not just contemptible, its repulsive.

That’s it.

There is only one real issue, and that is immigration.

Nothing else matters if the U.S. becomes Mexico with an Asian overclass.

America without the Americans?

The light goes dark.

Sarah Palin was the governor with the highest approval rating in the country when she accepted McCain’s invitation to be his VP. She had a whole lot of friends... her situation was not comparable in any way to Ted’s current situation. She sacrificed it all when she became McCain’s running mate. And now she even has people like you sniping at her. I am offended especially by you, who professes to be a Christian saying that “Sarah Palin is sleeping with the devil”. Maybe to someone who is not a follower of Christ it is “just a metaphor”, but to me it has deeper meaning. So NO, I will not be getting over it.

care whether Trump is conservative or not. You just want somebody to shake things up. It’s bizarre.

No. I don’t want to be given the shiny toy of picking the most conservative guy that either won’t win or is bought. I don’t want to be a tool of the oligarchy any more.

Why don’t you get it? It’s late... Trying to come up with a good analogy...

You go boating with Trump and Cruz in a big yacht in the ocean. You fall overboard. There are no flotation devices. Which man do you want to jump in to save you? Cruz has all kinds of great equipment like ropes and horns and stuff but he can’t swim. Trump doesn’t have any equipment but he’s a great swimmer.

Bad analogy but it is all can think of tonight. Cruz at this time is unable to attempt to save the country. Even though he is a true blue conservative. Trump has a chance, no one can be sure, of being able to turn this around; he’s made all the right enemies. But he does not have strong conservative creds.

Convinced that trump has pulled a Jedi mind trick on many.
Trump wasn’t just a businessman he was a political activist. Never thought I would see Conservatives dismiss trump’s liberal activism...jedi mind trick must be the answer for that

My main issue with Cruz and the wall et al is him stating, very clearly, just a couple months back when asked about the illegals parked out here “we’ll have a dialogue about that”.

I’m sorry, but that is about as lawyer/politician weasel speak as you can get. It was that statement that turned me off to him. I personally have a deep distrust of most lawyers, I doubt I’m alone in that, and an intense distrust and dislike for politicians.

Sorry I wasn’t here in 1998, but I hope you don’t assume that a newer date equals anything less than a person interested in our nation’s survival.

Many people in my life who happen to be far older (and wiser) than I, see what devastation our country has endured and are pulling for Trump. I’m sure this post means little to nothing to you, I just can’t stand all the vanities decrying those of us who support Trump.

No, we wouldn’t. We might still have Cruz and Walker in the race though. Not entirely sure Bush would still be in.

All that said - Bush, bad as he is (I wish he would drop out), is better and more conservative than the jackass.

“It sounds like you have an issue with the boss.”

So Trump is already your boss, must be nice to have that kind of faith in him!

Let me start by saying this election is NOT ABOUT TRUMP....

It’s about we the people are frustrated with the stinking Establishment politicians in Washington that no longer represent us. Trump is simply a manifestation of that anger

Now here is what I know about Trump.

You are concerns are very real, and I get that.

The people closest to Trump that have known him for years say this is the Real Donald Trump. The guy you saw before was the businessman in a big liberal city. In order to do business in New York then Trump had to play the game. I get that. Nevertheless, the people closest to him, like Roger Stone, said what we are seeing is the real Donald Trump.

If Trump would have said these things he does now before as a businessman, then he would have been out of business in a New York minute.

The fact that Trump is paying is own way means he does not owe anyone special favors. He’s is not bribed, on the take, etc.. Moreover, Trump could easily be on an island some where sip drinks for the rest of his life. Instead Trump is getting into a tough business.

The reason Trump is doing it is because he is worried that his children and grand children will not have the America he grew up to.

Trump is the only one who brought up the immigration issue. No one even talked about it. Trump attacks political correctness, illegal immigration, jobs going overseas, wants to build a strong military, take care of our vets, is anti Common Core, for low taxes and wants to bring jobs back home. Trump does all this while the rest stick their fingers in the air and consult with their advisers if it’s politically correct to talk about it.

America is frustrated with Washington. Now if Trump gets in Washington and starts doing the opposite of everything he is saying, then we will criticism him. Believe me I will be watching him.

To be frank, I’m sick of the same old song and dance. This Republic is on the verge of collapse. I don’t think it can survive another 8 years of an Establishment politician.

Having said that, I like Sarah, a lot. Politically, she has my respect.

There are three big difference between Trump/now and Giuliani/then:

1) Rudy ran as an open social liberal. That doomed his candidacy. Trump is not.

2) Trump is running against the GOP establishment and its donors. Gouliani was funded by and part of the GOP establishment.

3) This nation hadn't gone through seven years of an anti-American President trying to transform the nation through legal and illegal immigration.

Ted Cruz is eligible to be President of the United States and the Naturalization Act of 1790 would clear it up really quick for you. So spare me already when your candidate backs the Kelo judicial atrocity and a ban on so-called assault weapons. As for New York values, look no further than Trump’s interview with NBC in 1999 although he acted like he had no idea what Cruz was talking about. Cruz has never waivered on abortion, planned parenthood, or other social issues but feel free to insinuate otherwise.

Uh, that's projecting a whole lot of psychological diagnosis liberally spread around, uh, smearing more than a few folk indiscriminately, all at once.

Jed's reply to Miss Jane's folksinging:
"Lot a call for that, is they?"

Granny: "My Grandpappy had another saying, 'older violins make the sweetest music, you just gotta have the right beau.'"

She laughs and Jed just stands there.

Granny: "That's a witty sayin, Jed."

Jed: "Not too witty."

Granny: "Well, it sure beats, 'Well doggies.'"

The nastiness goes both ways. As a Cruz supporter myself, I am appalled by the horrible behavior of some of Cruz supporters.

When Sarah Palin endorsed Trump, some of the Cruz posters went insane and hurled vile insults at her which would make the leftists at MSNBC proud. The bad behavior goes both ways, believe me.

I’ll vote for two candidates:Cruz and Trump. Why? Because of the Immigration crisis. Immigration is the most urgent issue of our time and open borders candidates should NOT be tolerated.

The fact that you would vote for traitors such as Rubio, Bush and Kasich says that you don’t care about the survival of our country.

BTW, Cruz is only a man, not a messiah.
