Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and often others.
People with narcissistic personality disorder are characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance. They have a sense of entitlement and demonstrate grandiosity in their beliefs and behavior. They have a strong need for admiration, but lack feelings of empathy.
In addition to these symptoms, the person may display arrogance, show superiority, and seek power. The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder can be similar to the traits of individuals with strong self-esteem and confidence; differentiation occurs when the underlying psychological structures of these traits are considered pathological. Narcissists have such an elevated sense of self-worth that they value themselves as inherently better than others, when in reality they have a fragile self-esteem, cannot handle criticism, and often try to compensate for this inner fragility by belittling or disparaging others in an attempt to validate their own self-worth. Comments and criticisms about others are vicious from sufferers of NPD, in an attempt to boost their own poor self-esteem.
Another narcissist symptom is a lack of empathy. They are unable to relate, understand, and rationalize the feelings of others. Instead of behaving in a way that shows how they are feeling in the moment, they behave in the way that they feel they are expected to behave or that gives them the most attention.

Wonder if there's such a thing as anti-narcissistic personality disorder. If so, Trump may have it - even though he's as arrogant as the day is long. :)

Well, my opinion is this...I dont claim to be one, but have spent some time around rich and famous people by being a family member at a really good club. What REALLY stands out about this story is;
a. He noticed the guy.
b. He took time to engage him.
c. He invited him to play with himself and others.
d. He never mentioned it to anyone as far as I know.Pretty rare for a mega-wealthy owner and member to bring a guy like this along. A lot of people in Trumps league would NOT have done all of this. The guy was way past his prime, had tried the professional game and gave it up and was not exactly a hot prospect.

That said, for almost a year I heard about this awesome conservative, read about his views, that Dershowitz thought he might be the smartest guy he'd taught, and his views on paper were spot on.
THE VERY FIRST time I saw him speak, I couldn't believe this was the guy they were talking about. It's like there is no human there. I'd love to spend a week with him - because I might be wrong, but I don't think I am. It's like there are 5 layers of calculation. And that fits with him being a debate champion ... it's all grand oratory, but I don't see a human being there.
And I could be wrong. These aren't charges, they are instincts. The problem for Cruz is, look how many people he affects that way. Maybe we're all wrong - but unfortunately - a TON of people had exactly the same reaction I did.
I WANTED and still want that instinct to be different. There's just a total lack of authenticity, of genuineness.
But when you say 'charges' - you have to understand - we are picking a president - not sending a man to jail or depriving him of his rights. I have to predict whether this man can lead people, get things done. I don't see it happening. It's not just that he's a purist that he's so unpopular with individual's in Washington - it's not just his stances.
I can totally see how people find Trump noxious - I get it. I CAN'T see how Cruz supporters can't see at all how SO MANY find him smarmy, arrogant and not genuine.
These aren't insults - they are instinctive reactions combined with enough evidence that they are correct that it's enough to say 'no -> not that one.' If Cruz can't convince people it's different, then how can he lead a nation? (That all assumes he IS honest, and not just ambitious.)
I can tell you 100 negative things about Trump - in many ways, the guy is a mess, and I support him. (Actually I support his candidacy - not him as a person - but nor do I disparage him)
Can you name ONE BAD THING about Cruz? If not, that's a problem.
It’s a self reinforcement disorder. You don’t find very many poor late aged narcissist. The tend to have low life expectancy.
I think jealous people think being successful means your narcissistic.
The article says this disorder is prevalent in 1% in the general population.
Sociopaths are anti-social.
Trump is an old man taking one last leap at greatness and a chance to be in history books.
The only things I can find ‘bad’ about Cruz is his inexperience in actually governing and the fact that he isn’t ‘pretty’.
Considering the fact that no one in the race matches his knowledge and history - it’s an easy choice.
You have only seen the public face of the GOP candidates, not their private personas ... and you have definitely seen the behind closed doors face of your narcissist ex. There is a huge difference, as you should know.
My mother is NPD - she doesn't fit every description of the condition but enough to place her firmly in that category, especially being destructive to one's own children. Nicest sweetest lady to the outside world ... rips each of her children to the others.
My advice is avoid these people like leprosy. And by the way, they don't give a rip about you in the least, regardless of the charming act they turn on.
I was raised by a parent with this disease. The hallmark is lying. Over big things, over nothing at all, lying to you and about you in order to manipulate. Though they may seem to show signs, neither Cruz nor Trump to my opinion have this completely and utterly destructive illness. Both are egocentric to varying degrees, but what politician isn’t.
While NPD is the bread and butter of head shrinkers it is a total waste of time and money. NPD is a developmental disorder and as such there is no cure other than 6 feet of dirt. The disorder only gets worse with time. The only way to deal with an NPD person is to keep your distance.
that term is Malignant Narcissist. this is very different from that of a narcissist. a malignant narcissist is the one that commits crimes and is very destructive to those around them. examples of a Malignant Narcissist are people like OJ Simpson , David Coresh, joseph Mengle.
While narcissists are common, malignant narcissists are less common. A notable difference between the two is the feature of sadism, or the gratuitous enjoyment of the pain of others. A narcissist will deliberately damage other people in pursuit of their own selfish desires, but may regret and will in some circumstances show remorse for doing so, while a malignant narcissist will harm others and enjoy doing so, showing little empathy or regret for the damage they have caused. reference Wikipedia ( I copied and pasted it because the person said it better then I could.
now to the point I want to make while Donald trump probably fits with in that 20 percent of the population that has narcissistic tendencies he is not the Psychotic Monster that those who disagree with him have been using the term to destroy debate. he shows the ability to have empathy and have regret when he has done wrong. Granted at times he is full of himself but he is not someone who has in the past used criminal behavior to get what he wants.....
I have experienced the destructiveness of a narcissist and I am sick of seeing it used the same way that in the conservative community by conservative the way that calling some one a racist is used by the democrats.
both being a Racist and being a narcissist are real and one should think twice before using it.
You had an excellent reply, but in my personal experience it was the lying that proved most destructive. The lies were told to me and about me from the most egregious to over the slightest little thing of no consequence.
Electing one 2x as potus sure as heck didn’t damage his self esteem.
He already will be in the history books.
If you have not done so, I recommend you read his second book “Surviving at the TOP.”
He has a lot of self knowledge, and while he is brash and arrogant, he actually has the humility to acknowledge it. My favorite campaign button I’ve seen of his says, “WE SHALL OVERCOMB!!” There is some depth to the man, and believe it or not, wisdom.
He has nothing to prove. He HAS done it all in his chosen field, business. I believe him when he says he wants to give back to America. He sees her greatness, and how we are hanging by a thread. He DOES have a wonderful family, and grandchildren. Like all of us, he is concerned about the nature of the nation we will be leaving to our children and grandchildren.
I’ve been telling my friends that we’ve had the choice among a bunch of purebred varieties, some mongrels, and a junk yard dog who will patrol the perimeter and keep us safe. I choose the junk yard dog.
I had a sister in law that came into my family and was real destructive to all the relationships in the family...and it was the lying on small and large things to get an advantage that was the most destructive. my brother is still married to her and I have not talked to him in Eight years because of the poison that came out of his wife’s mouth. I am actually surprised that she has managed to not get arrested or double cross the wrong person and have something bad happen to her.
People are coming out of the woodwork with stories of generosity, kindnesses, and affirmation and good advice from Trump.
NO comparable stories exist about Soetoro. NO friends exist—only political associates.
iows....a mack daddy...
