The year was 2012. Zero was running for reelection and the Repubs desperately needed a better candidate than they fielded in 2008 if they were going to regain the White House.

As usual, Freepers were posting articles and comments about the upcoming election, the candidates running for the Republican nomination, how to defeat Zero, etc. During the primary season of 2012 Free Republics owner enthusiastically campaigned against one of the candidates, Mitt Romney. If the only information that you had about Romney was what FR's owner posted you would have had to conclude that Romney was pure evil concentrated. However, when Romney was nominated to run against Zero, FR's owner reversed course and got behind the nominee.

I became disappointed in what I perceived as extreme hypocrisy from the head of the premier conservative forum on the internet and quietly left the site for several years.

With the 2016 campaign season being free of Zero and shaping up to be one of the more interesting campaigns of our maturing republic I found my password and logged back in hoping to engage in interesting, civil and conservative dialog. Everything looked the same but there was a different feel to the place. A lot of anger, a lot of fear and a lot of hatred of conservatives for conservatives.

I do not particularly like Mr. Trump and expressed my opinion on the subject. Of course that resulted in being attacked with reckless abandon by the Trump faithful. When I retaliated I quickly earned a couple of timeouts and limited posting privileges, in other words, second class membership, while those who attacked me continued posting their vicious slanders against anybody and everybody that wasn't on board the Trump Train. The double standard couldn't be more obvious.

Then, on 4/23/16, the owner of the site pledged total support to Mr. Trump believing that Trump is the only path to victory over the presumed democommie candidate, Hillary Clinton, regardless of the fact that Trump is not a conservative. Freepers who openly refused to pledge their support for Mr. Trump were quickly purged with Trump's exuberant peanut gallery fearlessly and gleefully shouting insults and catcalls for all non-Trump supporters to 'ride the lightning'.

Welcome to Trump Republic.

I agree. That's why I was hoping Cruz would be Trump's VP this round. They would have made an incredible team. I had high hopes for a Cruz/Rubio ticket come 2024, and a Rubio/??? ticket come 2032. But.....

Well, it seems like a long shot now, but I'm still somewhat hopeful.

It’s called freerepublic for a reason with an emphasis on free. Trump has more votes from states with closed primaries to date than Romney had the last go round. Trump will reach 1237 and beyond.

Cruz is an establishment spoiler, at least attempting to be. We the People are sick of the GOP establishment. Sick to H#ll of them. McCain, Romney???

I don’t want an insider. I don’t want a man that is a megalomaniac as a president again who thinks it’s divine providence because his daddy told him so.

I tell you goodbye gladly. Go stew in your divine and pure label of conservatism. I’m old enough to look in the mirror and find that I’ve been taken for a ride by the GOP for so long I feel like a fool.

They are no friends to working class people. They’ve played us like a fiddle. They are part of the uniparty that keeps us in line with empty promises, election after election.

The GOP and the Democrats are the enemy.

I’m on the Trump Train. Where it takes us is anyone’s question. It’s sure a helluva better ride than the one we’ve been on for way too long.

Did I miss something? I preferred Cruz but he seems to have a few minor issues (Carly, the hell???). I know Trump is not a conservative but Hillary! is not an option and we’ll get a lot more we like with Trump than the whole hell of a lot we’ll absolutely hate with Hillary!

this is your mistake.. no one here believes that Trump is not a conservative.. nor do they believe by a long shot that Cruz is more conservative... You can keep repeating this lie again and again and hope it will become true.. but that is not reality...

I am just amazed on how many people have bought in to those lies. Cruz, the GOPe, the MSM all pushed the same lies about Trump.

They need to take a step back and take a look at who all teamed up against Trump and see Cruz was on the wrong side.

The funny now is, the Cruz fanboys are such a caricature that it's probably not even necessary to zot them any longer. They are welcome to stew in their own irrelevance.

I doubt you will read this. But I wanted to write, and I am writing this more for my own catharsis than anyone else's.

I have stated often that this forum, and perhaps other conservative forums, have no doubt been infiltrated by Liberal trolls trying to instigate a lot of in-fighting. Trolls is as trolls does. And trolls do what trolls do best.

I have also stated, as "conservative" people claim they are, many seemingly fail to realize that they are still human beings with two sides of a brain, and are bound to have liberal tendencies as much as the next person. They get caught up with the emotion of things, and thus get trapped into doing emotionally liberal things; like calling someone a "hypocrite," as if they're above and beyond being hypocrites themselves. The only difference: Liberals know to use these "things"/tactics to Conservative disadvantage; and Conservatives know how to use these same tactics to Conservative disadvantage.

There are many who truly and sincerely think Cruz would be better- but their view isn’t welcome here on Fr- The OP has a point about Cruz supporters being zotted for supporting Cruz- and the gleeful catcalls whenever they are- Hell- many actively call for the owner to zot cruz supporters- it’s like FR has become Berkley or something where opposing views are shouted down and the students demand that they not even be allowed to come and speak-

Many believed, and still believe Cruz has that medicine, and think perhaps trump may be playing everyone- And on most forums these views are at least tolerated without the poster being banned like they are here- When folks tried asking why Cruz supporters were being banned, we got the excuse that they were banned for ‘trying to undermine trump and disjoint the party’ or something to that effect- and when I looked back through a few pages of those that were banned, I found no evidence of their being a ‘never-trump’ advocate or some of them trying to undermine anyone- Apparently having a different viewpoint than trump supporters now constitutes ‘trying to undermine the party’ around here- It couldn’t possibly be because people genuinely feel that Cruz has better domestic policies- better foreign policies- or is more conservative on important issues like abortion, gay issues, trans gender issues etc-

As conservatives, people ‘should be able to agree to disagree’; without going to the extreme of banning or calling for the banning of those whom they don’t’ agree with- but evidently that’s become a foreign concept here judging by what we’ve been witnessing these last few months— Strengthening hte party isn’t accomplished by banning everyone who doesn’t have the same conservative choice as one’s self- nor is it accomplished by supporters gleefully piling on those who have opposing views and calling for their banning- These types of actions are what is tearing the party apart- not strengthening it

but alas- it’s much more fun ripping someone a new one when you have the owner’s blessings to do so-
