A new study indicates that having the gene for red hair, pale skin and freckles corresponds with a larger number of genetic mutations that can lead to skin cancer.
In fact, the findings indicate, those with the redhead variant of the MC1R gene had 42 percent more mutations than those without it, which equates to 21 extra years of sun exposure.
Redheads with freckles and pale skin have two copies of the gene, but non-redheads with just one copy could be at risk, according to the findings.

Neanderthal, Modern Human Hybrid
I walk outside for two minutes and I get a tan.
Rarely a sunburn.
I’m always Tan. George Hamilton tan.
Virtually everywhere I go people will ask me “How did you get so tanned?”
I have to tell them that I don’t “Lay out”, I just tan very easy.
I think, they think, that I’m trying to be tanned out of vanity or something.
It’s a curse I tell you.
Wow. Awesome heritage and story. My GG Grandmother hid from the Indian roundup. Hid in the woods. A family took her in and raised her as their own. Don’t know what ever happened to the rest. Her offspring were never to utter that they were Cherokee for fears for being sent to a reservation. It was so deeply ingrained....my grandmother didn’t like speaking of it. She did in later life.
Wow ditto back at you. I discovered last year that I have an ancestor named Potato Hole Wilson. He had that name because his mother hid him in the potato hole under the sod house while his father was being butchered by the Indians. So got it on both sides.

That is by far the funniest thing I’ve read on FR in a very very long time.
Still laughing
We have souls.
Lots of them.
[that we’ve sucked from others, but lots of them, nonetheless]
Their loss. :-)
No 'skip' in my family...mother had red hair, as well.
I have low pain tolerance, too, and had a nurse tell me about the ‘redhead’ thing. I also have ‘twin toes’ where I was told that is a ‘redhead recessive gene’. And I have beautiful feet, IMHO. Looks like He cut them on a perfect diagonal. Weird.
My red hair/green eyes/freckles came from my Welsh kin.
My skin is a weird “gold” color that never burns.
I just go a darker gold.
No idea if that exempts me, or not.
I know. Potato Hole Wilson and what’s great is that he also named his son that as well. LOL
Then everyone will wonder where you disappeared to...
Some of the Southern nicknames ring true. We still use them here.
I have auburn hair and need extra Novocain.
Those of us with red hair and green eyes, are we double doomed?
LOL! We had guys, growing up, nicked ‘tater and mater’. Also ‘stump’, ‘black jack, ‘bean pole’, etc.
I love the South. ;)
I have square feet. lol
Red hair and green eyes are like ‘peas and carrots’! Beautiful offset and complimentary colors. I considered getting contacts that make my eye color more green. I just can’t stand contacts.
Awwww! What a sweety!
My husband was talking to his elderly aunt about family heritage. My husband really wanted to hear that he had Native American ancestry. His aunt said “yes there was a Indian grandmother but don’t worry she was the white folks kind of Indian”.
