Health Buzz: Redhead Gene Linked to Higher Skin Cancer Mutation Risk
U S News and World Report ^ | July 12, 2016

A new study indicates that having the gene for red hair, pale skin and freckles corresponds with a larger number of genetic mutations that can lead to skin cancer.

In fact, the findings indicate, those with the redhead variant of the MC1R gene had 42 percent more mutations than those without it, which equates to 21 extra years of sun exposure.

Redheads with freckles and pale skin have two copies of the gene, but non-redheads with just one copy could be at risk, according to the findings.

Well, duh! I’m a natural redhead. I could have saved them a crapload of $$$ on that study.

Drat. My granddaughter is a redhead. I’m sure she got one of her genes from me. We’re doomed.

Yes, but, what about those that “Self Identify as Redheads”.

They clearly need another million dollar grant.

Souls are such an inconvenience...not having a soul was a great ice-breaker with the ladies when I was younger. :-)

That is why I have a collection of Fedoras in my closet. I never go outside in the daytime without a hat and a long sleeve shirt. I look good too!

Besides, only about 2% of us in the world, now. Virtually extinct.

Virtually extinct.

We're not having children. Your world isn't worthy.

Maybe. I don’t know. My natural color for years has been grey. But of my parents’ grandchildren, seven of the eight were red heads, at least as children including my adopted daughter. Our son was the only one who was not red headed and he was a tow head. He’s still blond at 36. I am a melanoma survivor. I expect to get it again before I die. My mother and my son both have/had psoriasis. Sensitive skin.

Mother had black hair and blue eyes. Daddy had brown hair and green eyes. Each of their 5 children had some variant of those. Both were just about pure descendants of Scots with one Irish GGrandmother.

Nearly all their grandchildren have red hair. I remember when my Daughter was born. My first reaction was. “oh no red hair”.

I have had maybe 30 skin cancers in my life and just two weeks ago had a melanoma removed from my neck. Fortunately it was caught early.

Yeah, the skin sensitivities aren’t fun. I do tan a little in the summer to golden.....but that’t it. Have to ne careful as I burn easily.

I was pretty rare as a redhead as I have hazel-brown eyes (I guess my Cherokee blood). Was constantly asked when growing up if I died my hair. Friends use to say, “OMG, your eyes are the same color as your hair.”

I have a tiny amount of Cherokee too. My great grandmother’s hair was coarse black, and straight. I know this because I have a lock of it. No way was she 100% Caucasian. On another branch the line goes back to Rachel, Cherokee princess sometime in the 18th century. These were the “white” cherokee who married into the European settlers in Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

I was also told that people with red hair tend to have lower pain tolerance. I did not know this until a physician asked me if I had naturally red hair. My son was being stitched up and she wanted to know in order to make sure they had enough of the anesthesia in the spot. He has red in his beard. I have a lot of red in my hair so it explains why novacaine tends to need a second dose and so on. Also why having stitches in my toe was the worst pain I have felt!
I have lots of freckles but my hair is primarily, or was, medium brown. Lots of red in it, though.
I do tan and know I shouldn’t.

Not only do Gingers not have a soul.....

It's why the space bugs from Zeta Jones Articuli abduct them and give them anal probes frequently. Lacking souls, they can be utilized as avatars for the Greys.

Next time you talk to a redhead, realize that you might actually be talking to an alien.

Haggis is popular in Scotland. Why? Think about it.
