Although only about 8 percent of pregnant women in a new U.S. study reported smoking cigarettes, twice as many tested positive for high levels of a chemical that indicates nicotine exposure.
The researchers analyzed data on 787 women who self-reported any cigarette use during the last trimester of pregnancy and had provided urine samples. The samples were tested for cotinine, which indicates nicotine exposure, and for evidence of other drugs including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, cannabinoids such as marijuana, cocaine, muscle relaxants, short-acting opioids such as heroin, long-acting opioids including buprenorphine and methadone, and phencyclidine (PCP).
The average age was 28. Most of the women had private insurance, while about a third were insured by Medicaid, the U.S. insurance program for low-income families.

My mother smoked. It made me the man I am today!!
And I bet a lot of those people are pro-abortion. You can kill the child...but by gum, you'd better not smoke if you're pregnant.
Really? Does anyone tell the truth when asked questions about their personal behavior?
For example. Did you know the percentage of Americans owning guns has dropped? Strangely enough gun sales are in the stratosphere. But by gosh, no one owns those guns. Or so say the polls.
My daughter was 4 months pregnant and a Doctor found a tumor inside of her and admitted her immediately. He said when we came back later to visit her to bring a bottle of wine and to make sure she had 3 glasses. He operated the next morning and took a 20 pound liquid tumor out and picked up the uterus that was pressed up in the pelvic area and put it back in place. The tumor was non-cancerous and the baby was born healthy and perfect.
I’ve always wondered if they put more chemicals into cigarettes now than they used to do? When I was growing up, it seemed that all adults smoked. Maybe it is just because I’m never around it anymore but I can’t stand the smell of cigarettes.
Mandatory prenatal exams; urinalysis, hair and blood samples; every trimester; make sure she’s not gettin into nothing shes not supposed to.
No, pots good for you.
If a woman said she didn’t smoke and her test came out positive did they ID her and call CPS? The article doesn’t say.
Would they willingly participate in this study and lie? Or was this done without their knowledge because they were likely young and poor and gave no permission and got no compensation?
But did the “single-center cohort” who provided the women’s information and urine get paid off?
I may be too Libertarian, but if a pregnant woman smokes it’s her business and her problem. Don’t even try saying “oh but the baby”. That’s her problem, too. Through too many of these effing studies have we been choked with laws and regulations.
What’s next? Mandatory Home Visits for ANY pregnant woman? I wouldn’t doubt it. What else will they look for? The PhD study author said “Health education and advice may not be enough to help women quit smoking, but resources like quit lines, such as 1-800-QUIT NOW, social support from counselors or home visitors can make a difference”, Hall said.
Anyone ever tries stepping a foot in my home uninvited I will let them know they’re not welcome.
Sorry. They go so slow so you don’t know what’s happening I wonder if they’re immortals. You realize mandatory pre-school is right around the corner, blessed by “studies”.
I agree with you Lurker.... I did smoke with both of my children...They weighed 6 lbs 9 oz’s at birth .. Me ,I am 4 ft 11 . and 95 lbs... Pretty much equals out I say.. I am 57 years old ( yayyyy ) .. My children are both happy and healthy :) I do not smoke now, quit 4 years ago... Miss it everyday... It was my way of dealing with stress.. Everyone has a crutch... I have a gal that works with me that is pregnant and does not smoke but she comes in with fast food everyday before her shift... That is her crutch... Again everyone has a crutch however some are just more judgmental.. :)
Until a generation or two ago, no one thought a thing about smoking or drinking (responsibly) during pregnancy. I don’t know if that made any difference or not.
I was the only one my mom DIDN’T smoke with while pregnant and I was a month premature! My 3 older siblings were all full termed, healthy babies even with mom smoking.
Agreed, especially since back in the 90s, the World Health Organization did a 15-year study in 17 countries trying to prove the dangers of 2nd-hand smoke and were shocked to find that it seemed to actually have immunizing effect.
Of course, this study wasn’t allowed to be published here but it was in countries that aren’t so politically correct.
I understand that concept.
Apparently “liberty” is way beyond your ability.

Neither did I.
Yes. After all smoking during pregnancy should be left to the mother’s “choice”. /sarcasm
I have known more than a few people who eventually died from emphysema caused by their years of smoking. Emphysema causes a person to spend the last years of their shortened lives having difficulty breathing, being hooked up to an oxygen tank which becomes their companion wherever they go, and being rushed to the emergency room on a regular basis when they need medical help. Then the family waits while the patient teeters between life and death. If they survive it is back to home and a limited enjoyment of life.
No charge for the cautionary tale. Free advice. Don’t smoke. Don’t start. Stay healthy.
Smoking and drinking during pregnancy was common in my day (I’m 72) and I don’t think it became an issue until the 80’s. My grandmother, mother and wife all drank and smoked during pregnancies because no one thought it was wrong. All my aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings and my two daughters were all born very healthy and with one exception live healthy lives. My experience tells me that the warning to not smoke or drink is like the globull warming crapolla.
No. It should be left up to nanny state busy bodies who are genetically incapable of minding their own damned business of course.

Let people have their “choice” including abortion. / sarcasm
What a sorry butt you are to judge. Right up there with the PC crowd, huh?
