13 signs your coworker is a psychopath

Bullying isn't just for school kids on the playground.

Andrew Faas, a former senior executive with Canada's two largest retail organizations, found this out the hard way when he blew the whistle on a corrupt colleague, and subsequently had his phone and email hacked and even received an anonymous death threat.

To help others, Faas says in his new book, " The Bully's Trap," any worker being hired or promoted in a supervisory position should be required to take a psychological test.

What would it test for? The 20 signs listed in the Hare Psychopathy Checklist, as developed by renowned psychologist Robert Hare.

A psychopath may not show all he signs, but they will likely demonstrate at least some of them, Faas says.

Here are 13 sign that one of your coworkers may be a psychopath, from Hare's checklist, Faas, and articles we found on Psychology Today:

"I think the most telling sign is their sadistic nature," Faas says.

A psychopath motivates others through fear, rather than respect, he says, and they intend to destroy rather than correct.

Most people are a little off in one way or another. I’d be surprised if I knew anyone who didn’t hit at least partially on a couple of those items. It’s the cumulative effect of several of them at once that will really bite you on the behind, though.

I didn’t realize until later in life that one of my “best friends” in college was a full-on sociopath. Not quite the same, but close. Once I realized the full extent of the perfidity, let’s just say that I decided I was done with that.

Really the giveaway should have been that time I was riding in the car with their family and he went off on a tangent about how people really like being lied to. Yeesh.

The worst part is that he is getting promoted and might be my boss.

I already work for such a guy. If he's not a Psychopath, he's at least a malignant narcissist. This guy is the only son of wealthy parents who have apparently never been able to discipline him. Unlike Trump's kids, his only job has ever been "owner of company".

I’ve had the misfortune to work with two of these monsters over the years, one was a boss and one a coworker. Both women. It’s been many years since , but I can feel the chill just remembering them.

They were the kind of people who would devote time to creating “situations” sure to bring chaos and confusion. When it happened, they sat back and watched, with actual excitement as their plans succeeded. And then smugly smile...as they knew they’d never get called out, or reprimanded. People were demoted, fired, a couple quit. And these wom9en knew they’d caused it...never had a moment of regret.

Unless one has experienced being around these people over time, it’s hard to express their effect. These weren’t women going through a stage, or showing the occasional dark sides we all have, they simply were incapable of any other way. Charming, seductive, clever and frightening.

Hillary scores a zero on #2, but otherwise she has perfect marks.

Actually, I'd give her credit for number 2 because even though she doesn't have any charm to turn on, she TRIES to. She thinks she does and is acting in the typical psychopath way by trying to engage it.

My boss scores a perfect 100 on this list. My advice to you: keep your head down and document everything on the work email system. (Send emails to "clarify" conversations and twisted encounters, disguised as an honest "reflection".)

If you are close to retirement, make your plans. If not, consider the options around you.

But don't fight back. You can't win.

The author revealed motive with one picture of a post-it under the heading “Their long-term goals are not realistic” and on the post-it, “Goals:
—Become President of the United States
—Make a billion dollars

Thing is, someone has reached one goal and another has not but they are both running for POTUS.

As for firing people, if they are not good at their job, it is not where they belong and you were actually doing them a favor by firing them. Actions (poor performance) speaks louder than words.

I married someone who was that way (abused child) but he left me soon afterwards because I was not obedient and he found a more malleable target. I had figured out my mistake by then, had little pain, and was given a wonderful son.

My son was soon going to be deployed and was involved with an unstable girl. I had my brother talk to him about being involved during deployment because coming from him and not a meddling mom made a big difference. He is now married to a wonderful woman.

Your advice is excellent.
Unfortunately, the psycho gf’s sabotage methods include keeping my son busy-busy with her high-maintenance demands and girly-girl activities, while subtly leaving him guy-time or energy for his father or friends.
She has managed to isolate him, so she is his only companion.
She invents fake —and trivial—crises to demand that he leave work (he has his own business) and attend to her. He’s losing clients because of her.
I told him the sex can’t be that great, and he stopped speaking to me for months. I can only listen if he wants to call and complain about her, and hope he wakes up from her spell.
She is a very pretty, charming, sugary sweet girl. Cotton candy with fish hooks inside.

Do some research online about how to get him out of the prison he doesn’t know he is in or, better yet, find a psychiatrist who has experience with that disorder and get sound advice.

People like this are truly frightening to be around. The best thing to do is stay far, far away from them.

I have had encounters with a few. You start finding out about the terrible things they do to other people. I have always put distance between me and them.

I’ve dealt with people like that, and it can be very liberating; they set the bar very low...
