No car sums up Chrysler's utter insanity during the muscle car era better than the Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, and its Dodge companion, the Charger Daytona. These so-called "Aero Cars" were designed as NASCAR racers first, street cars second, and they're among the most outrageous things to come from Detroit.
Road & Track contributor Steve Lehto wrote the book on the Aero cars, and he found us an example of a Superbird at the Woodward Dream Cruise this past weekend. Along with a fellow Mopar expert, Lehto tells you more than you ever thought there was to know about the Superbird.

My Dad used to have a Flying A Gas Station back in the 60’s.
One of his Customers worked for Chrysler and pulled in one day driving the Turbine.
He took my Father for the ride of his life. LOL
Wow! How do you top that? That must have been something else.
Yeah, he talked about it for years. Loved that car.
He’s 93 now. I’ll have to ask him about it and see if he remembers any more details. It’s only been 50 Years.
Not sure if the guy let him drive it.
190! Recline was way less than that.
Thats so cool you still have your Dad. Enjoy.
How was the turbine acceleration? Early jets were notorious for being slow to speed up (while landing) and slow to slow down (while fueling, while landing as well).
I’ll ask my Dad if he remembers.
At 93 he isn’t as sharp as he used to be but he remembers some pretty bizarre things that I have long ago forgotten...
Had one pull up next to us parking for mass at Loyola university. Clearly heard the turbine wind down. Very quiet.
I had a barn-find 1970 440 Six Barrel four speed GTX with an Air-Grabber Hood in 1991 that I found here in Charlevoix County where it had been stashed away for 15 years. It had the strange colors combination of being Hemi Orange with a white interior and a black vinyl top. I posted the story on the web site Cars in barns.com and it was up there for a few years. However, I didn’t have the space to restore it back to original as I wanted it but i sold it about five years later. Oh well...
I have a cousin in BC who would probably remember that car since at that time he had a highly modified '67 Z-28 Camaro that he would occasionally run at Northern Michigan Dragway...
Lots of guys up there at that time had souped up cars and they all knew each other............My cousin is still involved in drag racing and has I think a Dodge Ram pickup that he occasionally races just for recreation.
Car Ping !
For the Car enthusiast.......
Click on the green Superbird picture. It is the link to the video.
0-60 in 5.5 seconds.....Nice !

Slow in today’s world ...
I’ll stick with my ‘68 Mercury Cyclone thank you.
I love the classics but I enjoy my 2016 Mustang. Performance and comfort way above the old muscle cars.
