Why Vessey Turned Two Swedes Into Hittites
wsj ^ | 25 Aug 2016 | Howard M. Fish Lt. Gen. (Ret.)

Vessey, being from Minnesota, was accustomed to telling Swedish jokes. Just as Irish jokes start with Pat and Mike, Swedish jokes start with Ole and Sven. When he became chairman, Vessey was advised that it wasn’t politically correct to tell ethnic jokes. So, as he would tell the story, he stopped telling Swedish jokes and told Hittite jokes instead. The Hittites were a group of people who arose in the Middle East about 500 B.C. and then disappeared, so it was safe to tell those jokes. Vessey would start his story saying, “Let me tell you about these two Hittites, one was named Ole and the other Sven.” When his audience would break into laughter and cheers, Vessey would say, “So you have already heard the story.”

He showed his view of political correctness by giving it the ridicule it deserved.

the problem of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, political correctness was becoming a problem. Not as bad as today, but still a problem.

OP, I know who Gen. John Vessey is, but if you must excerpt then as a courtesy you should perhaps introduce the subject of your except, at the very least.

Yes, and the Bible mentions the Hittites. Scholars mocked the Bible for YEARS and claimed it was a fraud because NOTHING was ever found indicating their was a Hittite nation. Then, all of a sudden after 1880, archaeologists found direct evidence of Hittites. Critics were silenced.

Hittite Empire was destroyed about 1190 B.C. After that there were some "Neo-Hittite" states in eastern Turkey and northern Syria for a while. Whether Uriah the Hittite of the Bible was connected to those Hittites, or from an unrelated group, I don't know.

Hittite and two related languages, Luwian and Palaic, were members of the so-called Anatolian branch of the Indo-European language family (so distantly related to English). There were some later members of this group in the first millennium B.C. but they all died out.

Kurdish is Indo-European but part of the Indo-Iranian branch, so not descended from Hittite or closely related to it. Armenian is also Indo-European but forms a separate branch.

Some kind of old turkeys?

The turkeys are usually seen as migrants from Central Asia, the original population of Turkey was mostly (entirely?) Indo-European.

I have a Hittite joke about the famous Hittite Detective Boudreax from Thibodeaux, LA.

The Louisiana State Police had received numerous reports of illegal cock fighting being held in the area around Abbeville and had sent their famous Detective Boudreaux to investigate. Boudreaux promptly began his investigation and then reported to his Commander the next morning.

“Dey is tree main groups involve in dis rooster fightin”, he began.

“Good work! Who are they?” the Commander asked.

Boudreaux replied confidently, “De Texas Aggies, de local Cajuns, and de Demcratic National Char from N’awlins”.

Puzzled, the Commander asked, “Now Boudreaux, how did you find all that out in one night?”

“Well,” he replied, “I went down and done seen dat rooster fight in person. And I knowed immediately dat dem Aggies was involved when a Duck was entered in the fight.”

The Commander nodded, “I’ll buy that. But what about the others?”

Boudreaux nodded knowingly, “Well, I knowed de Cajuns was involved when sumbody bet on de duck!”

“Ah, I see, I see ... “ sighed the sergeant, “And how did you figure the DNC was involved?”

“De duck won!”

I actually know the Most Dangerous Joke in the World, written by Ernest Scribbler.

It’s been banned since the end of WWII.

Don’t read it if you can speak German. Not even playing somber music will help.

Two Hittite truck drivers are barreling along when they come up to an
overpass. A sign says, “Clearance: 11”2’.” So they get out, measure
their truck, and realize that it’s 11”6’. So the first Hittite looks at
the second Hittite and says, “I don’t see any cops around....let’s go
for it!”
