New Mexicans on the Fence About Newly Invented Tortilla Toaster
KRQE ^ | October 6, 2016 | Marissa Lucero

There are very few places in the country where tortillas are as important as they are in New Mexico. Now a Chicago company thinks it has an invention everyone will love.

It’s a first-of-its kind toaster made just for tortillas.

But when it comes to homemade tortillas, Irene Dominguez, will tell you there’s nothing like a fresh one straight from the grill.

Jay Guthrie, with Duran Central Pharmacy, said for the last 30 years every morning batch of tortillas gets started with Dominguez, and customers agree.

“They’d never be as good as Duran’s homemade tortillas,” Sharon Johnson said.

The start-up company, Nuni, claims the invention is a time savor and that it doesn’t change the authentic taste of each tortilla; but New Mexicans have their doubts.

“It’s like they’re stealing my culture,” Anna Padilla said. “When I make tortillas I make like them off the ‘comal’ there is nothing like a fresh tortilla.”

“I really wouldn’t buy something like that because I think the culture here likes to have their tortillas warmed up on the stove, even burned a little on the edges,” Jennifer Montano said.

The company boasts that people can put in six tortillas at a time and after sixty seconds, they’re ready. The toaster even comes in colors for every kitchen and can toast both corn and flour tortillas.

Nuni is crowdfunding to raise $100,000 to mass produce and market the tortilla toasters.

While I am sure that the fellow is right, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room in this world for a device that makes a better product available for the many people who don’t have access to the best of breed. We’ve done it with pizza and bagels. Consider it as recognition of being in the big leagues.

No kidding. I’ll bet she’s never had a pizza, frozen or otherwise.

There is only one way to toast a tortilla, and that’s on the burner of a gas stove, turning constantly until done.

“It’s like they’re stealing my culture,”

OMG! America's stealing Mexicans' culture? WTF?

I got bilingual signs everywhere on everything, press 1 for English, Little Mexico in Mayberry RFD, a Mexican aisle in every grocery store, Mexicans working our jobs, Mexican TV channels, needing to speak Spanish to get hired...

If it was hard to heat up a tortilla it might be something worth having but you just stick it on the burner for a few seconds or a griddle if you’re particular.

“It’s like they’re stealing my culture,” Anna Padilla said.

By the same token, I should be offended that Mexicans are "stealing my culture" (German) every time they brew up a batch of Corona and call it beer.

Anna Padilla, make me a quesadilla.

I eat more tortillas than bread... I’m not interested, My cast iron works the same on my gas stove as it does on a campfire!

I just throw them in the pan with some cooking oil.
I make killer breakfast burritos that way, I guess I'm stealing their culture, and it's delicious.
Salsa and or Siracha sauce, yum.

“a time savor”??????

I suppose that they save a lot of money by not employing an editor. That must be a real money saver. :=)

KRQE should stick to reporting on the weather, and rush hour traffic around the big-I. Perfect example of how they take a non-story, interview an idiot, and now all New Mexicans look like braindead retards.

In a big dry skillet is OK as well. You can get it just warm or toasty brown without the black grill marks.
