I thought THIS was the new look for American women. Shouldn't this be the Miss USA costumer now?

After working the stage in their swimsuits and evening gowns, the 86 candidates of Miss Universe 2016 had some fun as they showed off their national costumes to the audience at the Mall of Asia on Thursday, January 26.

I thought that the swimsuit part was axed because it was so sexist. Lol. SILLY me.

Miss France (the winner) is drop-dead gorgeous.
Her interpreter was awful. She mentioned that she was in medical school twice and he failed to mention it at all (he butchered some of her other translation too). She did speak fast, but come on!!!
This is the only part of the Miss Universe I am interested. Prefer costumes with historical connotations. My favorites:Austria for the “Sound of Music” theme. China with the pandas. Great Britain as Britannia. Italy as straight out of the Renaissance. Norway as Elsa! Ukraine wearing a traditional folk clothing. What the hell was USA trying to be???
Oh, and her question about whether countries are obliged to take in refugees or whether they should have the right to keep their borders closed, she did say that France and Europe have open borders, and mentioned the advantages of free travel, but said that in the future if France decided to close their border they have the right to do so. The translator forgot to translate that last part. I’m not sure if it’s due to incompetence or political reasons.
My personal favorite...Canada.

Why does Miss USA look like a space viking?
The Miss USA costumes are always stupid compared to the other contestants.

Yes. Miss Mexico looked like Miss Texas, and the Miss USA costume was a hot mess.
A space station?
There is some serious costume engineering going on here. (I hated the shoes.)
If those are “national costumes” then I’m the King of Spain.

AND WTH is Miss USA’s costume representing?
Well, it is the Miss Universe contest, not the Miss Earth contest. Space aliens are welcome in the spirit of diversity.
America must be the Las Vegas show girl.
And Poland was the one with the Polish flag.
Some of the costumes were works of art.
Most of them looked like tehy were headed to Carnival or a Mummers parade.
