(Simple vanity) When Trump and Xi Jinping were walking alone & chatting, who was translating?

Posted on 04/08/2017 1:54:13 PM PDT by RoosterRedux

When they were walking alone and chatting, they were responsive to each other's speech and seemed to be having a good time.

I don't think Xi Jinping speaks English and I don't think President Trump speaks Mandarin...so how did they understand each other?

Were they wearing mics and earphones?

Yup. He heard it was a red state. But seriously,

I lived and worked in China for three years and saw the worst translations up on business signs you can imagine.

One of the aspects that made the stay enjoyable.

We have a Chinese “Takee Outee” restaurant nearby. Too funny.

True.

But from what I have read, Xi can read some English but he is not fluent. And cannot speak it.

Of course, that info may be incorrect.

Xi was part of a Chinese agricultural delegation that spent a couple of weeks in Iowa back in the 1980's. He was a relatively low level guy back then. He stayed with a local family, so I've always assumed he spoke enough Iowan to get by. Whether he's fluent in English is another question.

The Iowa connection apparently means a lot to Xi. If it was his first trip out of China, it would probably have made a major impact, especially 30 years ago. And it is probably a good thing that his first exposure to the U.S. was the heartland, not New York, DC, or some crazy place in California.

That was my impression, too.
Translators walking behind them.
Perhaps a special Secret Service agent speaks Chinese?
Probably more than one.

It could also be more “cult of the presidency” staged crap. They do a lot of that.
Walk together for the photographers. Stand by the window posing as though they were lost in their thoughts. Dramatically posed in a hundred ways. Most of what we see is Hollywood. He’s probably saying something in Chinese, and Trump nods and answers in English. They both know the game.

English is a second language in both China and Japan.......To their credit, the highly educated from those countries speak better English than many in our failing high schools........

I don’t know. I lived in Japan many years ago and even then many of the Japanese spoke at least rudimentary english.

In 1987 I spent two weeks on business in Taipei. In the hotel where I stayed a French contingent came and stayed in the same hotel. The French did not speak either Cantonese or Mandarin. The Taiwanese did not speak French. They had to communicate in English.

I loved it.
