My bad. I was thinking of Clifton Davis, popular African-American singer, songwriter and actor. Davis, still alive at age 71.

This is the most obscure actor I’ve seen a death announcement for before!

I never got how this character fit in Bond movies. It seemed non sequitur and out of place.

It may have made sense with “Live and Let Die” which was based in Louisiana, but by coincidence having him vacation in Thailand at the same time as Bond was there in “The Man With the Golden Gun” was really a stretch.

I’d be willing to bet his character was the inspiration for Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit movies.

J. W. was but an extreme caricature of a Louisiana sheriff or chief of police. I’ve known some who came sorta close. As the setting was Louisiana, it worked for me.

Also, all four Guy Hamilton Bonds (Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man With the Golden Gun) had outrageous characters.

His films are my favorite of the entire series.

One of those movies that when I see it playing on TV, I stop what I’m doing and watch.
