SYRACUSE Why have sightings of unidentified flying objects around the nation more than tripled since 2001? Why is July the busiest month for U.F.O. sightings? Why did they spike in Texas in 2008, or in New Mexico in September 2015?
And how in the world, or out of it, has Manhattan racked up New York States second-highest tally of U.F.O. sightings in this century?
These questions and many others emerge from the first comprehensive statistical summary of so-called close encounters: 121,036 eyewitness accounts, organized county by county in each state and the District of Columbia, from 2001 to 2015.

I have.
Everyone is walking around with a camera, some of us are walking around with REALLY good cameras.
If there were UFOs visiting regularly, the evidence would be overwhelming. It isn’t, therefore....
Great one! Grab the Kodak box camera from the 1930’s!!
...I wonder how many FReepers have seen what they believe to be a bona fide UFO and are willing to admit it?...
We had a very convincing experience ourselves and wonder the same thing as you do.
I speak freely of the sighting but am unable to understand the determination of some people to ‘explain it away’ when it really is impossible given the circumstances.
If anything, I ascribe them going through a laundry list of rational possibilities as fearing that it may be real.
It’s tempting to write all that off as a sort of localized mass hysteria, there were sightings all over, not the typical saucer, these were glowing orbs that could stay in one place for lengthy periods of time, soundless, then zip off at impossible speeds. That’s what we saw. A few weeks later, there was an uproar on the local NBC affiliate late news about one landing on an expressway near Mt. Airy, crazy description of clawed hands. This was I believe in 1972.
So many phone cameras, so few photos now.
There’s a lot more to this world than we currently understand, I’m not uncomfortable admitting that. Not particularly comfortable with the idea of encountering some of it, though.
Interesting... many UFO cases seem to be in proximity to military bases, which suggests it’s either military technology, or technology is a part of a phenomenon that is interested in military and defense infrastructure. However, anecdotally, the only two times in my life where I have personally had someone describe to me their sightings were both around farms.
Why? Because it became disinformation to hide test and training flights of the U-2 and A-12 (the predecessor to the SR-71) spy planes. People forget that until the late 1950's, U-2's were finished in bare metal, and as such the glint off the Sun when the U-2 was flying at over 60,000 feet altitude made people think they were seeing a UFO.
I’m a Geezer and my phone has a camera feature, but I don’t use it.
My kids email their IPhone photos, so I can print them.
Love to sort through ‘real’ photos with notes on the back. Have been writing my memoires for decades - will finish them some day soon and hope I can find all the photos LOL!!!
There’s a beautiful resort town in the mountains of southwestern NC that has had a spate of very recent “airship” sightings that sound a bit like those big black triangular things they were seeing in the desert southwest several years back, didn’t realize that until I went looking for some record of the “outbreak” I was describing from my youth. Looks like I was off by a year on that, must’ve been 1973.
I saw something in the early 70’s that I’ve never had an explanation for. It was a hot summer night. We didn’t have air-conditioning & I went out to the front yard to try to cool off. It was a dark, moonless night, sometime around 11:00pm. I was lying in the grass looking at the sky when I noticed a point of light moving steadily on a north to south trajectory. I figured, “Cool! A satellite!” I kept my eye on it for several minutes. Then it suddenly made an almost perfect right-angle turn, continued on for a bit & then vanished. Satellites aren’t supposed to do that.
If those things are “ours” we’re so far beyond what is out in the public domain that it isn’t even funny. I don’t write off that possibility, though.
We’re about 25 miles from Mansfield Lahm airbase. That somewhat famous UFO incident where a UFO buzzed an ANG chopper-the copter was flying out of Lahm.I also witnessed a light to the north of our farm do a perfect right angle turn at high speed.Really freaky to see something like that.
It’s hubcap tossing tournament time.
I saw something in a wilderness area of western CO in the early '90s that was right on the line between explainable and unexplainable. It could have been a helicopter but a number of factors argue against that possibility.
I was coming off of Donner Pass in the 1970s when everyone had a C.B. radio. The radio was going nuts with everyone seeing a UFO, traffic was pulled over with people watching. I stopped and looked and looked and saw nothing. I was very disappointed, seemed everyone else clearly saw a UFO. It hit the newspapers and all, I cannot explain why I could not see it.
As to no decent pictures, take your cell phone out and try to take a picture of the moon and see what you get. Cell phone cameras are great for snapshots, not so great for any distance at all.
I am on the fence about UFOs, since I have never seen one it is hard for me to believe. I also wonder how often we see things that we can’t explain but are easily explainable by people who do know about things like what our military might be playing with or what certain aircraft are capable of doing. Who knows?
Space tourists. The world is getting so freaky we’re attracting comedy fans from Beetlejuice to the Romulan Neutral Zone.
I have never seen a UFO. My brother saw one in the late 1980’s slowly moving down the mountain range near our house one Sunday evening. A deacon’s wife at church and several others in our small town witnessed the same craft, cigar shaped just moving slow. As small kids my Dad would take us out at night with his telescope and show us planets and stars and how to recognize satellites and planes in the night sky. My brother said this was not anything he had ever witnessed before.
My Dad and Mom witnessed a UFO a few years back while out on their back patio watching a meteor shower. Dad said the object was a white light and at a distance and making lightening fast radical 90 degree turns and moves which no conventional aircraft could make. They said this went on for about 10 mins. and it just up and vanished right in front of them.
So many camera phones but too good. They would show the pie plates on a string.
