The one in the picture? I thought it might be, but I’m not expert enough to be sure of the year with Jaguars.

It’s very nice. I think the Type 1 series were the best looking E-types. The big bumpers, taillights, and uncovered bulging headlights just looked cartoonish to me.

The later E-type had a better stance, being considerably more planted by comparison to the rather tippy-toed Type 1, so it wasn’t entirely a bust. The headlights, taillights and bumpers were forced upon them in the US, to be fair.

A friend of mine has the red with white stripe 2006 Ford GT just sitting in storage. I don’t know why he doesn’t drive it, he’s in his early 70’s and doesn’t have a wife to leave it to.....

I came home to Pennsylvania in February of 1968 on leave from basic training in San Diego. One of my father’s patriotic friends was a contractor who volunteered to let me use his 1961 XKE for the two weeks. This was the first year with 3.8 motor and non-synchro first gear. Plexiglass headlight covers that were declared illegal by the feds the next year. Gunmetal gray with black leather. About 40,000 hard miles. The body was good but the leather seats needed re-stitching. Picked it up in town and took the back roads to our farm. Naturally, the first thing I tried to do was top-end it and when I banged fourth gear at 6,500 around 100 mph on the tiny back road straightaway, the clutch slipped and that’s all I could get. Hit a 90 degree left-hander in second gear going in around 40 and nailed it just before the apex. The backend came around nicely so I corrected with the wheel to the right and gave it more gas. The wood steering wheel flexed and I freaked for about 2/10 of a second and went with the flow and came out of the corner 20 mph faster than when I entered it 1.8 seconds before. The vibrations and exhaust note of that car were exhilarating reminding me of the hairiest Brit motorcycles I had ridden like Triumphs, Enfields and Nortons. The owner wanted to sell me the car for $2,000 but when my neighbor girlfriend’s older brother who raced an MGB told me that a clutch job on an E-Type was about $400, I decided not to buy it. Oh well.

A 1961 “flat floor” E sold at auction a couple years ago for over half a million. 1961 Was the first production year. The covered headlights were glass Not plexiglass and 1967 was the last year to have them. 1968 saw the introduction of the Series 2 which did not have the glass covered lights and also had twin Stromberg carbs instead of the triple SUs. US emissions and safety regs!

RE: Paid right at half what they were new.

Agree. The sticker price new was over $65K. Cost me less than half that with low miles and basically a new car warranty. Not sure I’d ever buy a new car again.

Yep. I decide what I want and then start looking around. They were getting ready to red tag the Jag. The ford lot here only keeps used cars on the lot for 30 days then they wholesale them out. We paid barely above wholesale price because I knew that. Lol
It’s the only way to buy a car.
