Vigneron, owner of Wolf Restaurant on Melrose Avenue, has been a chef for more than 20 years. He’s appeared on “Top Chef,” “Iron Chef” and many other shows over the years. He is also an avid surfer.

“We’re calling it ‘Straws Suck’ because if you think about it it’s a play on words,” said Vigneron. “You actually use straws to suck and they suck because they pollute the oceans.”

IIRC, in the “old days”, we had paper straws. ??

Yes we did. And they tended to collapse by the end of your drink (and back then drinks weren’t “supersized”).

And of course, using paper straws mean we’re killing off the trees!

"IIRC, in the “old days”, we had paper straws. ??"

Back in the 40's and 50's the straws at the one and only drugstore in Laurens, Iowa were all paper and wound into a tube shape. We used to unravel them into long streamers to hang on our bicycles.
They came enclosed in a paper cover that you could blow thru it and shoot the cover across the room.

Great place where you could order a cherry coke and watch them prepare it.

Somehow the flavor has degraded since that era and it doesn't seem to be coming back.
My favorite new entry is those cans of "Lime-A-Ritas" (for those of us who don't get out much at age 75+). Although it was never mentioned...the straws were biodegradable.

An anonymous source told me that it takes 7 trees to make one paper straw!

That’s a straw man argument.

Great picture. Yes, the paper straws would be biodegradable, but probably unpopular, since trees must die for their production. Laurens, IA - not too far from here (Omaha).

I have worked in restaurants. The amount of waste of all types is enormous and this imbecile is concerned about straws?

That’s the perfect gif.

Might have known this hooey is coming from Marcel. What a little putz. He’s so full of himself. Foam! He’s one of the reasons I had to quit the food network. Well, him and Mario B-whatever. Both think they’re God’s gift and definitely gay. No thanks. I may have to get a straw from the kitchen just to protest. Naw, it’s not worth the effort.

" Laurens, IA - not too far from here (Omaha)"
Back in the early 60's I used to work in Omaha radio, at KOIL (mighty twelve-ninety) on a Midnight to 6 AM shift....followed by Frank "Coffee-head" Allen.

Few people know it but Johnny Carson once worked there. Had a big portrait of him as a former "KOIL Good Guy"

KOIL pronounced "COIL" got lucky with that easy-to-remember moniker was bested in the call-letter department by WOW (AM 590)It now bears the unexciting "KXSP"....but they have the best AM signal out of Omaha and KOIL has gone news-talk.

The flavor isn’t the same because back then the soda jerks added more syrup to the carbonated water. Heck, even the bottled drinks had more syrup back then. Today, the soft drink companies think they can save money by barely adding any flavoring.

We used to claim sore throats so our parents would buy us the syrup. Yum.

Since he is in LA I'm afraid to know how he "uses" them.

You think they will stop there? No chance.

I have a question. Do the straws have motors ? Well how do they get to the oceans? Eh?
The problem is not with the object, but with people’s habits.

I’ve never heard of Pixie Sticks, Flavor Straws were paper with a flavor lozenge stuck in them I only think they made them in Chocolate and Strawberry.
