Thousands at risk of pig virus from ‘Supermarket X’ sausages (Europe)

A leading British supermarket may unwittingly have infected thousands of people with a pig virus that causes liver cirrhosis and neurological damage,
say researchers at Public Health England.

Hepatitis E (HEV) is transmitted by sausages and pork products from Europe, mainly Holland and Germany.
UK pigs do not have the virus strain in question.

Infectious Disease Ping - Hepatitis E (Europe)

As recently as 7/23/17, Hepatitis E has been found in rabbit from France.
The virus can lead to cirrosus of the liver and other organ diseases in humans.

BenLurkin :" ‘Supermarket X’ ? "

Yup ! Isn't that a pi$$er !
The European health authorities don't want to name the supermarket chain, by name.
Hopefully, this will be rectified by tomorrow morning

As per CDC:

"Hepatitis E is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis E virus (HEV). Hepatitis E is a self-limited disease that does not result in chronic infection.

While rare in the United States, Hepatitis E is common in many parts of the world. It is transmitted from ingestion of fecal matter, even in microscopic amounts, and is usually associated with contaminated water supply in countries with poor sanitation. There is currently no FDA-approved vaccine for Hepatitis E."

I thought the EU had the highest of the highest food quality and safety standards.

Okay, back to the hands-on prepper mode.

King Moonracer :" What about polish ham? I love that stuff."

To the best of my knowledge, the transmission of the virus is not limited to just sausage.
See post #11 for further information about the virus: "Hepatitis E".
Furthermore 7/23/17 the CDC advised that they had found Hepatitis E in rabbits produced in France.
It would appear that Hepatitis E is not all that uncommon

What I find quite disconcerting is the fact that a health organization found a transmissible disease,
but purposely failed to notify the public of the location or the name of the source .
What about people who have an already compromised immune system, or who are on chemotherapy ?

I haven’t eaten rabbit since I was a kid-no squirrels or froglegs either.

We are just about out of the meat from the quarter of beef that we bought about a year and half ago. I need to see if we can get another, but have lost the number. We had to go on a 6 month waiting list last time.

Had the same thought.

Similar is mad cow disease, which would not have entered the food chain under kosher supervision, both because the animals were sick and because nerve tissue is not kosher.

Rabbits are also not kosher, in reference to the other posts on this thread.

I don’t pretend to understand my own dietary laws, but freely acknowledge that G-d is smarter than me and has a Plan.

Yes, it is wise to follow Torah — the Law was meant for everyone.

Yes and no.

The Covenant of Mt. Sinai is binding only on Jews. The Laws of Noah are for everyone.

That said, if you work through much of the Laws of Noah, you get most all the ethical aspects of the Covenant (including related to the treatment of animals), excepting Shabbos and certain items regarding ritual purity.

A further qualification is there is nothing bad about following the Law, even if not Jewish, and they are certainly very informative and helpful dealing with life in this world — case in point being pigs harbor nasty diseases.

Moses didn’t write the Commandments, he brought them from Adonai. They are for everyone, all mankind, period.

Correct, Moshe did not write the covenant of Mt. Sinai, but by its express terms, the Covenant is a contract between G-d and the Jewish people.

Now, everyone is welcome to become Jewish and bind themselves to that Contract. But it is not required.

Here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosaic_covenant

The are ample of the mitzvah that do not even apply to all Jews, only Levi and Cohen, and then at certain times and in certain positions.
