NASA to Stop a Doomsday Supervolcano by Stealing its Heat
Popular Mechanics ^ | August 18, 2017 | Avery Thompson

Posted on 08/20/2017 8:45:36 AM PDT by EveningStar

Beneath Yellowstone National Park is a giant volcano. The heat from this volcano powers all of the park's famous geysers and hot springs, so most tourists probably don't worry about having tons of hot magma under their feet. But perhaps they should: The Yellowstone supervolcano is a disaster waiting to happen.

The supervolcano erupts about every 600,000 years, and it's been about that long since the last eruption. That means the volcano could erupt any day now, and if it does it'll send enough dust and ash into the sky to blot out the sun for years, along with blowing a 25-mile-wide crater in the western U.S. That's why a group of NASA scientists and engineers are developing a plan to prevent an eruption by stealing the volcano's heat...

NASA's plan is to drill a hole into the side of the volcano and pump water through it. When the water comes back out, it'll be heated to over 600 degrees, slowly cooling the volcano. The team hopes that given enough time, this process will take enough heat from the volcano to prevent it from ever erupting...

How they going to get a permit to truck in all the equipment....?

Going to need a big drilling rig...thousands of tons of cement ...and a huge high pressure pumping system...not to mention recovery of vent gasses.

This proposal make fracking look like a kids sand castle.

“Why is NASA involved in this?”

Because we will all become unwilling astronauts when the big blast happens!

NASA ought to concentrate on SPACE....leave everything else alone.

This is like the CDC talking about gun control.

Steam is pretty explosive in it’s own right. I no longer trust NASA to know their @ss from a hole in the ground after that Muslim outreach crap. They’re just another fetid featherbed for overpaid puttybutts with gold plated health insurance and a pension, as far as I’m concerned.

" I don’t think pumping water into a volcano is a good idea. The water will flash to steam, and the pressure has no place to go.

In the book THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, it blew when sea water was found leaking into the volcano, and I believe Krakatoa blew for the same reason.

More recently Mount St Helens......water leaked in......super heated steam created.....bammmmm!

See Yellowstone Park NOW! Once the fed “experts” start messing around, they will likely screw things there such that the geysers will no longer erupt and the other thermals will disappear. Enough experts already. Most experts (esp fed employees or consultants) are mutants. Their brains are not functioning well other than to steal yet more taxpayer money.

Feds saving us. See the mine leak problem last year in Colorado. Enough “saving” already.

Exactly. Only the US government could be so dump to put a space agency in charge of a problem below the earth’s surface.

This is one of the dumbest ideas ever by an organization the specializes in weapons grade stupid ideas.

Once someone lined up a mass of fire trucks and tried to stop a lava flow with thousands of gallons of water a minute. Guess what. The lava rolled on to where ever it was going anyway.

Is NASA also thinking of looking into harnessing the tectonic forces from which we get earthquakes? After harnessing ALL the natural forces on earth, what forces will continue to shape the dynamism that is natural, and necessary to the earth??

Instead of a water heater leaking steam, think a pin into a ballon. Pop, it all comes out and we have an instant super volcano eruption ... NASA should stick to space.

Maybe it is the moozlum nasa employees who thought of this idiotic idea? There is a lot of inbreeding and goat-breeding in their culture.

Why the hell is NASA involved with a volcano on earth? Talk about mission creep!

Noooooooooooo! Leave God’s amazing creation alone! They’re going to destroy a wonder of the world! Who cares if it blows up? Seriously. Take care of human threats and leave the volcano alone!

“NASA’s plan is to drill a hole into the side of the volcano and pump water through it. When the water comes back out, it’ll be heated to over 600 degrees, slowly cooling the volcano. ‘

This should have the same level of effect as pissing in the ocean.

I read they recently discovered a humongous new magma chamber under the old one at Yellowstone and that there is enough magma down there to fill up the Grand Canyon 15 times over. And it’s about 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit or so.

Now, I don’t know how much of that heat they are planning to release into the earth’s atmosphere (let’s just assume about a third, five Grand Canyons of it), but you’re not going to prevent a massive volcanic eruption by draining out a little of it. You’re going to have to drain out a huge amount of it. And to think they don’t want me to mow my lawn every Saturday because of global warming. Me and my little one gallon lawn mower gas tank is the big villain here, not the heat from five Grand Canyon’s full of 1800 degree magma.

Do you think NASA is in cahoots with the global warming nut jobs?

I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
But I need your love to keep away the cold

I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
But I can’t get warm without your hand to hold
