I suspect they probably lost around 25% of their entire fan base, and I expect that to grow over time. This is because most of their fans were were conservatives.

My theory overlap with yours. The bulk of the "super fans" were men who came of age 5 years either side of 1968. These are the people who buy season tickets, build team shrines in their basement, etc. They are reaching the age where death and/or disability stops them from spending big bucks on the team (see actuarial tables). I suspect that if you look closely at the stats the decline in NFL fandom has been ongoing for a few years now. The younger fans just do not have the disposable income, and the casual fans are the ones who quietly leave, and for whom it is less wrenching to change their lifestyle.

Kapernick would have been an oddity if the wannabe political commentators in the sports press had not turned him into a cause celeb. While Trump's commenting on this issue may have been unwise, the actions of the NFL owners was idiotic. The NFL likely will continue, but it will be with a much reduced fan base as this episode will simply put an exclamation point into the decline of the NFL.

I'm like you, my watching just gradually declined over the years for many of the reasons you mentioned, just a bad product, death by a thousand cuts.

I'll be flying the Flag Sundays this Fall.

Folks...read my lips, the NFL and, possibly the NBA will never be the same again. They have killed the goose that lays the golden eggs. My dad used tell my brother and I, “Boys, no matter what, never bite that hand that feeds you”.

Both the leadership & management of the NFL and NBA have allowed their mentally, flawed, inmates to escape the insane asylum, enabling and supporting them in openly bad mouthing their loyal, dedicated, fans, their Flag, their National Anthem, their Fellow Americans, the American Military and the American Republic...itself.

This idiot driven NFL/NBA, left-wing, America hating Obama/Clinton/Democrat human scum & vermin, have in one swoop destroyed themselves, their game and their ability to make a decent living. SAD, but clearly expected for those that are far from the sharpest knives in the drawer. What dummies, fools & buffoons these sad sack fools are. Good Riddance, NFL & NBA!!!

>>It’s entirely another to just not be horny for her. This isn’t a boycott, or a political statement. This is falling out of love.<<

This is battered wife syndrome. The owners think that, after flipping off their fans and then punching them in the nose that flowers and a box of chocolates will fix things.

This time the battered spouse is leaving for good.

“So, Mike Florio, respecting the military and the flag is ‘pandering’?”

That’s what I wondered when I read it. Then I concluded that the writer is an idiot and just doesn’t understand the meaning of the word. (Vocabulary is HARD, you know.) I believe he equates “pandering” with “respecting”. But, then again, I’m not sure.

Earth to NBC: "It's too late. Fans have already decided. Just look at your ratings."

The networks have somehow decided that NFL games are appropriate places for their commentators to wax politic (Anyone want Bob Costas' opinion?).

I can't even watch a baseball game with that toad running his mouth. Without someone feeding him statistics he'd be doing traffic reports in Podunk.

“For true fans, the tattoo on their soul is permanent, and disowning a favorite team is every bit as hard as disowning a child.”

Take that fans!

If you abandon the NFL, you weren’t a true fan.

Gag.

If it were not for football and the white male ticket buyer and buyer of products advertised on football games, these so called ‘players’ would be nine dollar an hour hamburger flippers.

I agree with you ... a strange choice of words. Florio is a lawyer and in the past I have had respect for many of his articles.

If I take what he is saying here, literally, then he is saying the NFL over the years, with military salutes and air force flyovers, have been “pandering” to the fans. In other words putting on a show that they (the owners) themselves didn’t care that much about. In that case, now it makes sense that they are not forcing their employees to honor the anthem and the flag as they have the right to do and as their employee handbook says they must do.

If all above is true, then I give the players 49% and the owners 51% of the responsibility for all the problems they have now created. And for the loss of revenue, fans, apparel sales, ticket losses, TV ratings, commercial ads, police escorts and any other fallout that results from their irresponsible actions.

I did not know Goodell was son of the pinko Goldwater Republican Senator.

Long after daddy was out of office he remained a Washington swamp creature, during which time, he was picked by GOPe President Ford's for the rubber-stamp commission that gave Vietnam War deserters and evaders amnesty. So it figures the his son would also be a dirt-bag making a career of selling out America.
